On this paid researcher note, this is my thoughts. Not all paid researchers
are evil and if they are recommended, I will link them, but only with a KNOWN
reference... Someone who I have dealt with and whose word is reliable.
When I first started out, NO ONE would help me in my county. They shunned me
at the Genealogical Society and low and behold, one day, a lady befriended
me... She was a professional researcher... After a few years of swapping
emails, we struck up a deal. I provide a link to her pages, and she in return
would do some of my query work for free. You know the standard lookup, I have
a SMITH JONES ANDERSON who may have lived married died in your county or state,
can you help??? (grin)
It has turned out nicely. About 1 out of 15 become a client for her, and most
of them post their information to my site. She is low pressure, that is, she
answers their query for free, then let's them know she has a service for a
modest price if they need further assistance. In addition, she has provided so
many FREE things for my site. Also, it is nice to be able to recommend a
professional, someone who, will not RIP them off, or not give them a fair
price, or not deliver what is promised... Well, we all been there, done that.
On another note, did everyone get the note that
Ancestory.com bought out
Rootsweb??? And all donors at a certain level will get a free year (paid
services included) for our past sponsorships??? I just signed up and got my
free subscriptions, so if you don't hear from me, I am busy getting my
"monies"
worth (yuck yuck yuck)...
I would like to have a discussion or any comments on what you think the future
of rootsweb will be? All my sites are on Rootsweb.
