Happy New Year to you all!

Clipping of the Day From The Janesville Gazette (Janesville,
Wisconsin), 31 December 1853, page 2:
An Old Year and a New Year Letter
You and I have passed along, with old father Time, another mile of
life's great journey, since I last wrote a new years letter for "the
Gazette." Another milestone is reached! another year has fled! Sit
down, reader, and let us talk together of the past, of the present,
and of the future.
This is the holiday season--a season of reunions around the old
hearth-stones and under old roof-trees; a season full of tender, and
maybe sad memories; a season for reflection upon the past, thoughts of
the present, hopes and anticipations for the future. Humanity comes
nearer and hugs closer to our heart strings as we sit around the
cheerful wood-fire, these days--these days of the heart. We think of
the happy days of childhood, of old happy home, far away to the east;
of smiling faces, whose sunny influence once brightened our daily
occupations; of all the dear old home faces, "That gathered round the
hearth in winter weather;"
Of all the happy reunions, of all the happy meetings, "In summer
evenings, round the open door--Kind looks, kind hearts, kind words and
tender greetings, And clasping hands whose pulses beat no more, Yes,
we do remember them."
