Hi-
Just to add a little. I thought it was a "southern" thing-but on my mother's
side her aunt and uncles went as- Virl went by William, Carl went by Pete,
Ethel went by Johnny, Ervan went by Bud, etc. And none of these were their
middle names.

Hi! As for Hattie, I had a cousin name Hattie, but don't know her REAL
name...
Germans however did give pet names that may or may not be short for the
given
name...
Such as I have an uncle Sonny who was really Byron, and an aunt Martha who
was
called "Mamie" "Meta" or "Mutzi" and an aunt
"Meta" or "Mamai" whose real
name
even my dad didn't know... A cousin Lloyd that went by Richard, an uncle
Howard
that went by Joe...
So my point is, it might be a "pet" name... (grin) - Isn't genealogy just
swell
(big grin)... Hang in there, when you really find it, you will jump for
joy!!!
