Hi all,
I attended the FGS conference in Ft Wayne and attended a presentation on how
to search online database sites,including
Ancestry.com.
One of the highlights was the fact that if you specifically search in
Ancestry's "Obituary Collection" within the "Historical Records",
you are
actually searching contemporary obits that already appear on the Internet on
some newspaper's site today. If you find a "hit" in this collection, it
does take you to that newspaper's website if you click on the "view record"
link. However, this is a locked database, so only subscribers can get the
information.
So they are already doing these crawlings and capturings. I'm not certain
which of their other collections this applies to, if any.
Thanks,
Peggy Perry

Tina ;the other thing I wonder.. is now that they have the right to do..
they
can start with obscure stuff can't thing? things that are not found as
easily
on the net? I don't know I just think the whole thing was about as
disrespectful as a company can get.

Anne thank you for your congrats! I appreciate yours and the many others I
have received publically and privately.
I do not know the answer to your question, but I will certainly do my best
to find out the answer.
Thanks again!
Tina

Hi Tina,
Thanks for the update -- it's a relief to know they have stopped and also
that US GenWeb values our independent work. Congrats on the election/new
job,
too.
I have a question regarding part of the email from ancestry. Am I to
assume
they are, and will be, saving cached genealogy pages?
Thanks and congrats again,
Anne
