Jeannette,
I LOVE the layout -- it is so very user friendly! and the main links at
the top make it easy to go in and out of for return visitors...
Very nicely done!

I too wanted a new 'look' when I took over a site in Wyoming... I looked
around the internet at various websites I liked and decided to copy a bunch
of their 'features'...
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wyteton/index.htm
I have three columns - (What you see is also a Dreamweaver template that I
have just changed the color scheme a bit...)
I like having 'main' links at the top of the page - these are what I think
of as my most used links.
The far left column is where I am trying to put 'newsy' or informative
items
as well as a photo or two...
The center column has the main data and/or information.
The right column has additional links that might be appropriate to the
page.
I have a bit of tweaking to do yet as on some pages the right column does
not end up where I'd like or adding a bar to separate items...
-----
Rather than have ALL my eggs in one basket (oops, I meant, links on one
page...) I have tried to group them into more user friendly 'categories' or
key words.
When I go to a GenWeb site, what am I looking for first? If I don't find
it, where do I click to get to this or that?? So using myself as the
guinea
pig, I again decided to limit my links at the top to include only the
following (and each page should have the exact header to make it easier for
my visitors...):
Home :: County :: State :: Misc Items :: Queries :: Surnames :: Contact
(I do NOT want to give up my queries to anyone so maintain a list on my
websites. That may not work for everyone but it works for me... And the
surnames are for those that have been submitted in the queries.)
I have tried to identify what I can that pertains to ONLY the county and
place that info on the county page. I then branch out to the state level
for additional resources since some people, like me, have research that may
span multiple counties within the same state, etc...) Misc Items could be
everything else like helpful web links that pertain to research but may/may
not necessarily be for that county/state. (I for one am researching all
over
the US and if I see a link that is help for, say, Illinois or California, I
am excited even if I am looking in Wisconsin or Wyoming!) Sometimes there
is a problem figuring out which page is the 'right' page so I just put it
where I think it will be found quicker and easier and then put a link on
other pages if the items seems 'important' :->
Just thought I would share!

Subject: [WIGEN] DIscussion on webpage formating - and use of Message
Boards
In my spare time - I have been researching how to update all my USGenWeb
pages
so
they will be more streamlined - and easier for the researcher to find
information -
I
do have a search engine - but I would be interested in hearing any
innovative ways to format my main page(s) - so first time researchers
or new genealogists will not be so overwhelmed - Currently, I have
everything listed on the left side on a main menu - then when you click
on the General subject, all those pages have a more specific menu -
but, I think this might be difficult for some people to figure out how
to navigate the site. I am trying to figure out if a top general topics
menu
with a specific on the left menu would be more effective - or more
confusing.
Also, I would like to find a way to get
around using the Message Boards - when they were ours, it was great -
but now that we "share" with ancestory - I feel the data being
collected is no longer "USGenWeb" and even though it is helpful -
transcriptions get lost in the queries - does anyone else feel that
way? And if so, What are you doing? I especially loved the
"automatic" to the archives, where the individual could post to the
archives and our mailing lists at one time - but since WI moved to a
new server - I am not sure if this feature is even working anymore???

I would really like to hear some POSITIVE things people are doing for
USGenWeb - we used to be about helping each other - and the genealogy
community - now the lists are so filled with NEGATIVITY no sane person
would want to read - much less post to... Can we really get back to
genealogy ???
I have done much more not only for the USGenWeb Project but the general
genealogy....
I am current doing additions and revisions, mostly tech features and
corrections to the FamilySearch ResearchWiki along with adding links to
the USGenWeb Project in every state and every county. The Wiki team
meets every week on Tuesdays at 2 pm Salt Lake City time. Everybody is
welcome to attend and listen in. (
