to read the helpful things but there were alot of
broken links, etc. Is it my computer? Con someone else check and see if it is me and not
the web page please?
I used to check my sites for broken links quite often but when I received your (MAK's)
email I realized I hadn't done it in awhile so I will be getting at it the next few
days. Thanks MAK for the reminder.

Subject: Re: [WIGEN] Message Boards at Rootsweb
Anne and All - I wrote a really nice email, hit send - and it disappeared, so if you get
two versions of this - I hope that I said all the same things - and I am going to add
alittle bit - grin - "BEEP" email - (Paula - I think your email and my email
browsers are related - they both eat our emails - grin)
Let me start by saying, that Tina and I have always agreed that each CC should do what is
comfortable for them. Obviously, I am comfortable with Rootsweb, enough that I still have
my counties there, and the mailing lists and the message boards, however, I have started
putting all my new data in the new WI Archives maintained by Tina on a different server,
as the backup plan. If you aren't aware of it - it is at:
http://usgwarchives.net/wi/wifiles.htm
And, the cool thing, is that there is an automatic form that both you and your
researchers can use to post - see
http://www.genrecords.org/wifiles/ It also has a mirror site - which is the Rootsweb
Archives - so it is the best of both worlds.
I am putting this link up on my pages in place of the Rootsweb Message Boards - As I
would like my researchers to know their input is with USGenWeb. However, having said that
-
It is no secret that I have been with rootsweb since before it existed (when we had no
mailing lists) and were using the PAF (instead of Family Tree Maker), and USGenWeb was a
figment of all our imaginations. When WIGenWeb first started, I volunteered for WoodCoWI -
and from there, it grew into what it is today. Even way back then, I had my own backup
systems - I used to print out all my pages as they changed and kept them in binders - then
we got mailing lists and message boards, and I made sure they were "linked", so
the message Board would post to the mailing list - and anything on the mailing list I
manually post to the Message board with my reply - a few people got upset over that, now,
I post the query without their name(s) and contact info, and my reply. This way - more
people can help them and I can help more people. All the messages are backed up in the
Archives, and even if the message is deleted off the board, it is still in the Archives.
And, of course, I get a copy of all the messages, so that is another backup.
Now, that the WI Archives are on a different server, maintained by Tina - I post every
thing there also.
However, if you are doing something else, and it works, by all means, post it here, so we
can all learn and grow, I am always open to new and innovative ideas.
And if you don't have a place - see
http://www.usgwarchives.net/wi/wifiles.htm#counties - I am sure that Tina will let you
adopt counties which are not taken by WI CCs.
As for using other mailing lists, sites, etc, none of it is really guareenteed either -
and some of them, are known for using others research on them without permission - so,
again, it is up to you as a CC.
++++++
For those of you who are new, and maybe too overwhelmed by the above topic - or unsure
how to attack it, there are plenty of ideas here -
http://wigenweb.org/volunteer-pages.html
I was shocked to see only 14 hits since 1999 - we have more than that in CCs - so - that
is another underused resource we could review as a group on the mailing list and see if it
needs update - or provides info on the newest options available to us?
Hope this helps answer some of your questions...

Subject: [WIGEN] Message Boards at Rootsweb
Hi,
Not sure how to actually word this for the posting as our messages get
archived, etc.
So, here's the question: I have quite a few messages on the Message Board
for Shawano County. Is there an EASY way to retrieve a back up of them
(I'm the admin) and are there long term concerns for leaving them all up at
Rootsweb? Any other boards out there that work just as well?
Thanks for your suggestions in advance...
Anne
