Paula - I used the original PAF and then went to FTM which was originally $9 and you got
free updates - (originally they were both put out by the same company - which is
associated with the LDS genealogy section, at least that is what I was told. I got a free
PAF program from the LDS family center - at least 12 years ago -- it was very limited -
and you could print but not download the gedcom - or perhaps I just wasn't
technologically proficient at the time.
I have heard the Vista screws up alot of non-windows programs - so, that could be the
problem - I am using FTM 8 - hopefully, you backed it all up prior to switching - please
tell me YES? If so, I bet FTM would refund the money and send you the version you were
using before.
Ellen - can you compare the two softwares alittle for all of us - as to what is similar
and different - what you like and don't - thanks.

ps I do not have internet access at my home right now, but I should be back up sometime
over the weekend - I hope, if not, by next week. Gotta run - only got 8 minutes left for
the day. Thanks.

I just switched to Roots Magic and I absolutely love it.
They offer a free trial. Here is the link.

I was a FTM junkie for years, also have used Legacy. Legacy was nice but Roots Magic is
extremely better for citations.

Subject: [WIGEN] Genealogy software programs
Hello Everyone-
I have discovered with the 2009 Family Tree Maker when I export a gedcom file it changed
things and deleted things. For instance, it deleted people from my Great Grandfather back.
It added a wife to my husband - he has never been married before. So I am looking for
another genealogy software program for the time being and may go back to FTM after the
kinks are gone. But for now I am looking at all of the different programs available. I
have been with FTM for many years and like it but can't trust it right now - so do any
of you have a different program you use? How do you like it? How long have you used it? Is
it compatible with Vista?
I had used PAF when I first started out and then switched to FTM. Do any of you use PAF?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks-
Paula
