Subject: [WIGEN] Setting up a MIRC chat
Paula, the key is having researchers who want to use that feature - and have the
capability to use it - so why not try it and see???
Personally, County chats have never worked for me, as originally, the chats were sorta
setup for the administrators - I did try with Wood Co just to get to know my researchers -
but, the group I started with was not very "computer" literate at the time and
were struggling just to send photos and obits with attachments (grin)... I am now starting
to think about having Town Researchers - and if I do - I will certainly try that avenue
again -
For those of you who want to try this -
---First send an email to all your researchers, via Mailing List (if you own one)
---Explain MIRC and your goals so you can see if there is interest and include your
channel name "counties"
---Sign onto MIRC and select Rootweb
---The Rootsweb window should pop up (top blue line reads STATUS-your nickname -
blahblahblah)
---Type in /join #counties (replace counties with what you want to call it)
---A window should pop up and you can start your chat -
I will add one suggestion - try making a new "channel" before sending the email
- and write down what you did - that way, when you go to open the "channel" for
your chat - it will not be a struggle. This is the "simple" way, and as you can
tell, anyone can open it - so ---- and unless you make it private, anyone can pop in -
Now, if you want to really get into it - register your site, and stuff, here is a great
place for ADVANCED users -
http://irchelp.org/irchelp/changuide.html
Keep in mind - you can also have personal chats - that is, when you are in the
"chat",
you can click on a person's name and just chat with them - you can have
a "side" conversation - without anyone interrupting - especially if the
"chat" is having a good talk on another topic. I use this feature if I am asking
another CC for help on programming or research -
Also, you can arrange an informal email anytime - I send them an email - ask them when
they can stop in and then we meet and chat while we collaborate on the project we are
working on - great for debugging a problem - or just catching up on someone's personal
life - or talk about cooking - or ----- you get the idea.
For Beginners - if you are overwhelmed - there are plenty of people who can help you on
our WI list - or if you are a "read and learn" type - I always start here - as I
use MIRC and find it to be a legitimate site
http://www.mirc.com/help.html
Well, that is probably more info than most of you needed - for now - but you can save
this for the future -
Take care - and I hope to see you on Rootsweb - send an email if you want to join Tina
and MAK and we will drop by - we are signed in most of the time we are at our computers -

Hi-
Kind of along with what you were talking about MAK - has anyone out there ever tried
setting up a chat for your county? How did it go? Were there many who joined the chat?
Just wondering. I have thought about setting up a chat for Waupaca County several times
but never have.
