Not to belabor the subject, but this response to Tina's passed along
warning on "Genseekers" came to another list and it is too good not
to pass on. (permission was given to pass on)
Hi Rita & List,
I haven't checked out this "genseekers" site yet. Do you know if the
scam is only to bill you for a
false subscription?
FYI, there are other scam artists doing similar things on eBay where
they ask for credit card and
bank account info as a 'verification' of your account. They have a
'mirror' of a real eBay page,
(looks exactly like a real ebay page), but the link takes you to
some off-shore URL where they
farm out your data and then clean out every account you have! I
almost got caught, but others
have not been so lucky.
Are we sure this is originating with "Genseekers" or
"FamilyDiscovery?" Or, could it be a third
party scam using their site to lure you in?
The difference usually is based on the origin of the link. If you
receive an 'email spam' type
request with a link to a subscription page, it may look like the
real site, but if you hit 'view
source' the URL, (often just a number) is not the same as the URL
named in the link.
Either way, watch out for requests for bank account info, especially
if they ask for things like SS
card #'s and 'mother's maiden name, etc. You might get burned for a
lot more than a single
year's subscription fee.
Thanks for the heads-up!
