Subject: [WIGEN] Fw: Problems FTP'ng...
Please read below - this is all I know - so - until you get your new passwords - we will
not be able to FTP -
You can only get the virus if you logged into the server, which Tina manages that has our
state page and some WI counties on it, during the period which the first warning was
issued and now (It does NOT apply to counties on the rootsweb server or other servers that
we know of) - And if you logged in, it does not necessarily mean you have the virus - if
your virus checker is up to date - it should have blocked it and issued you a warning if
your computer was compromised.
You can not get the virus just by viewing the pages - so there is NO need to warn your
counties - as it will not affect them - it only affects the USGenWeb volunteers who upload
to the new server with WI pages (Tina monitors) and other states/counties that are on the
same server - Several other states have reported the same hacker.
This particular malicious
virus gives the hacker the ability to read your keyboard strokes, potential gaining
access to all your password accounts over time.
Please exercise caution during this period -
1) work on your projects off-line
2) Be patient and wait for the ALL Clear from USGenWeb -
3) If you don't have a virus protector - you might want to invest in a good one -
4) If you have an up to date virus protector - you might want to scan your computer with
it.
I am sorry I didn't respond earlier - I have had a horrific migraine - and have been
bedridden - Tina is still without computer - I will continue to monitor today - so if you
have any questions, please send info to WI Admin Mailing List -
You are all GREAT to work with - and Tina and I are very glad to have a team like all of
you -

USGW was hacked again last night - got in through a back door, but
all is well now. Hopefully all holes have now been plugged. Those
working on it have reported as far as they can tell everything is clean.
If you are having trouble ftp'ing, it's because pwds are being
changed for security purposes.
You should receive a note about it later in the day or this evening,
with the new password.
A big thanks to Joy Fisher, Sherri our NC, and all others staying on
the problems, and seeing them through! I'm sure they appreciate
everyone's patience.
