I thought this was worth responding to and forwarding to the WI List for a discussion -
read the bottom emails first - and then my comments - to make more sense - lol -
basically, someone is posting photos from USGenWeb sites to Find a Grave without
permission and without giving credit - - - there was a long discussion on the SC list -
but this is very applicable to us WI CCs - I am always interested in hearing your thoughts
- especially if it WORKS - lol -

Subject: Discouraging posting photos - rather than linking
There are a couple ways you can discourage this type of behavior - (I deliberately did
not use prevent, as the computer literate will find a way around most things)
1 Disable right click on your pages however, this is not recommended -
http://erikvold.com/blog/index.cfm/2008/12/21/do-not-disable-right-click-...
2 Put a watermark on your photos - a watermark will not show on your site, but if someone
"borrows" your photo and tries to print or post it - the watermark will show -
3 Request individuals link rather than copy paste the photo to other sites - this seems to
work with the individuals who are basically honest but don't understand WHY you
don't want the photos uploaded to another commercial site.
If you have other ideas on how to discourage copyright infringement - other than not to
post info - I would be open to suggestions - thank you.
Tina - could we consider a page for uploading images in the volunteers (CCs) information
link(s) at
http://www.wigenweb.org/volunteer-pages.html - do's & don'ts - thanks -

ps I have been quiet for awhile as I was dealing with family deaths and medical
emergencies - it has been emotionally exhausting - so not on-llne much - thank you for
your patience.

Someone posted my copyrighted photos! How can I get them removed or
get them properly credited?
-----
Response from Find A Grave -
It is a violation of Find A Grave policy to post such photos. There is
a link to this policy on every single content page at the Find A Grave
website. As you probably know, having a policy is one thing, but
enforcing it can be exceedingly difficult. Once an image is posted
anywhere on the internet, many people believe it is 'free game' for
them to take and use as they wish. Physically (or electronically)
preventing this is an impossible challenge because anything that can
be viewed on a screen can be captured and reused. That leaves us with
a policy, which we clearly state and enforce when violations are
brought to our attention. Users who have posted copyrighted material
will be sent a warning. Repeat offenders of our copyright policy will
have their account suspended.
If you find any copyright abuses posted by Find A Grave users, please
report them by sending us an email with a link to the photo(s). We
respect copyright laws as well as the ethics of 'giving credit where
credit is due'. Please let us know if you would prefer to have your
photos removed or simply transferred to your Find A Grave account. If
you prefer to have them transferred please be sure to include the
email address associated with your account if it is different from the
address you are writing from (don't forget to include a link to the
photo). If you do not have a Find A Grave account and would like one,
we can create one for you and transfer the photo credits to the new
account.
