Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The County page and the map page are all updated.

Hi-
Sorry to hear you are ill and hope you have a speedy recovery.
To answer your questions.
As to the quesion - Can someone else come in and make a website taking my place. Anyone at any time can do a website of their choice. Even when we are on Rootweb someone could make a county of their choice. It would be associated with the USGenWeb Project - it would just be a personal website. My place wan't with Rootweb - it is with the USGenWeb Project and I just used the Rootweb server. The new site anyone would have would not have the same address as the my old address. If they did I do not know where I would stand. BUT you could run into that problem I guess with any server you user. I am not real up on many of these things so I hope I am answering this in a way that is understandable?!?! Maybe Tina can answer that better than I can.
You would contact Joy Fisher with USGenWeb Project at jfisher(a)sdgenweb.com.
As for tips for making it easy. I found tranferring Waushara County very easy and I am not real savvy on much. That was a worry I had. Once I got the password, etc. I just made sure every thing was tranferred over to the new server through my FTP program and doubled checked. I deleted the files that were uploaded on to the Rootweb server (except the index page) and place the redirect and that was it. It was alot easier than I thought I it was going to be.

Since this is a discussion list for us to help each other, I am typing
away........
I need to add my comments about the "to move or not to move" topic
I too am confused, and so I am just going to put my thoughts out on the
table. Sometimes that helps to clarify things for me and for others.
First of all the USGenWeb Project is not a project of Rootsweb, am I
correct? They are two separate entities. ??? (hey, when I joined 10 years
ago, rootsweb and genweb went hand in hand, and seemed like the same thing)
My concern always is whether or not USGenWeb was indeed an affiliate of
rootsweb. That would really complicate things*....*
**
However, when the USGenWeb was formed, rootsweb HOSTED the project, (and
computer space) and at no charge. The USGenWeb home page still has the
'Hosted by Rootsweb' banner on it. [a HOST computer, as I am using the
term, is the computer that physically contains your files]
But I still see no notice or sign that USGenWeb 'belongs' to Rootsweb.
Ancestry only owns rootsweb. (once again, correct me if I am wrong)
My own main concern, is the fact that no matter what your domain name, a
rootsweb computer is hosting my page, and my page takes up a lot of space.
currently if I put my county page on another commercial host computer, I
would pay a minimum of $100 per month for that privilege, a cost I can't
absorb on my own. (that price is 5 years old)
Ancestry purchased rootsweb, (and I am grateful for that, because I knew the
'free space'/rootsweb could not continue forever for free) and ancestry
still says that they will not discontinue the free space that was promised
with rootsweb.
Now, switching gears a minute, ..... to obtain another domain name, just
seems to me like a waste of effort. You can re-direct your website thru
any other domain name, but I don't see the purpose. Your webpages are
still physically in a rootsweb computer, now owned by ancestry, and
adding a different domain name is just smoke and mirrors....... the same
thing as adding the word ancestry to your URL.......so what?
My concern is that if many usgenweb pages physically leave the rootsweb
computer (physical location of your page files), and find another computer
to host their pages, then ancestry will not have to allow you back at the
'free' rate later on. The existing 'free' page space that applied when
ancestry bought rootsweb, is probably grandfathered in, but might not be
available for new/returning pages.
Now, forgive me for repeating myself, re-directing your page links through
a new domain.....what does that do? Please let me know, because I see no
benefit. Even if you re-direct through a different domain your files are
still in a rootsweb computer owned by ancestry, and they certainly can put a
banner on those files, add the word 'ancestry' to your url, etc etc, Can't
they add the word 'ancestry' to your new url???
And, what does it hurt? I want to keep my pages FREE! I have gotten
great benefit from ancestry (I used to research way back in the stone age,
when your library had to order a census microfilm for you, and you waited
weeks for it to arrive, and then you ordered the next one, waited three
weeks, etc etc.) And YES, I am furious and refuse to renew my subscription
to ancestry after their pricing decision of offering 'all or nothing'!
I'll use more Heritage Quest, thank you, and hope I don't start suffering
from withdrawal.
But as yet, I see no benefit to change my domain. That's like cutting off
your nose to spite your face. And if anyone with a bit more technical
expertise can explain the benefits of switching to a diffferent domain, I
will listen intently.
Thank you for listening, and I hope I have not muddied the waters even more.

Paula,
Thank you so much for your sharing your thoughts on this with us. It
is getting clearer in my mind what is happening (although I'm pretty
befuddled and muddle-headed right now from meds and sitting in a
hospital bed trying to get rid of my pneumonia - Yuck). So some of my
questions may seem rather silly and redundant.
I see that you have taken your Waushara site down (great website!) and
left a re-direct from the Rootsweb server. By doing this, is there
any risk of someone else coming in and making a new website on
Rootsweb for that county and taking your place? If that's a
possibility of happening, then where do we stand?
I know I have more questions about all of this, but they have kinda
'left me' for the moment. Please clarify again...what steps do I take
if I decide to make this move (who do I contact for setting up
accounts, etc.).
Any other advice on how to make this transition easier?
Thanks for your help,

Hi All-
The announcement below along with the AUP are the reasons I believe helped many have decided to move off Rootsweb. I have cut and paste the annoucements below but you can find them on Rootsweb at http://blogs.rootsweb.com/newsroom/
I am speaking for myself but this this annoucement was the thing that finalized my decision to move. When they announced the banner desicion - I was undecided. BUT I did not want the banners as to me it some how looked like we (USGenWeb and WIGenWeb Project) was affliated with Ancestry.com and I wasn't sure that I wanted the free pages in that position. I was concerned that the researchers visting the site an seeing this would think we were now behind Ancestry.com and may not feel so free to contribute to the sites. At the next genealogy society meeting (Waupaca Area Genealogical Society) I did ask (without giving my opinion first) our members how they liked the new look of the page? Many of them had the same opinion that I had.
I had not yet made a decision when the first announcement below came out. That annoucement, their hosting agreement (AUP) and research for free space made the final decision for me. I do not want the Wausahra and Waupaca County free pages behind the wall of Ancestry.com. Rather than worry about what is coming next or what is going on - I am moving the counties I am CC for.
I have nothing against Ancestry.com or it's owning company, after all they are a money making company and that is their business. I do subscribe to Ancestry.com and use it frequently. BUT when it comes to the the county free pages I feel I want to insure that they do indeed remain free. Here is the address for their owning company The Generations Network http://www.thegenerationsnetwork.com/ incase you would like to read more about them.
This email is not to encourage others to leave or stay. I write it only to give more information to the other CCs of WI and to give the reasons why I decided to leave. No matter where the CCs of WI choose to host their sites we are still a great bunch of CCs working together to further the free genealogy for WI researchers.
I have started moving the Waushara site and will announce the address as soon as possible. (Hopefully some time today.

RootsWeb Announcement
March 13th, 2008 by Tim
As you know, The Generations Network has hosted and funded the RootsWeb online community since June 2000, thereby maintaining RootsWeb as the world’s oldest and largest free genealogy website. TGN remains committed to this mission and believes that RootsWeb is an absolutely invaluable and complementary resource to Ancestry.com, our flagship commercial family history site. We believe in both services and want to see both communities prosper and grow.
As part of this goal, we have decided to “transplant” RootsWeb onto the Ancestry.com domain beginning next week. This move will not change the RootsWeb experience or alter the ease of navigation to or within RootsWeb. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience. What will be different is that the Web address for all RootsWeb pages will change from www.rootsweb.com to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com. Again, the RootsWeb experience is not changing.
The decision to host RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is being made for one primary reason: we believe that the users of each of our two main websites can be better served if they have access to the best services available on both. Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa.
Today, despite the fact that Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com are the two most frequently visited family history sites on the Web, only 25 percent of visitors to Ancestry.com visited RootsWeb in January 2008, while only 20 percent of visitors to RootsWeb visited Ancestry.com (according to Comscore Media Metrix). We think we will serve our users best by doing a better job of letting them know what is available on both Ancestry.com and RootsWeb. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is the first step towards making this happen, but we will absolutely look for more and better ways down the road to advance this goal.
Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com will also make it easier for us to make changes and improvements to the RootsWeb experience in the future.
All old RootsWeb URLs will continue to work, whether they are bookmarks or favorites, links to or from a hosted page or URLs manually typed in your Internet browser. We will have a redirect in place so that all old URLs will automatically end up on the appropriate new RootsWeb URL. You will never need to update your old favorites or links unless you want to. We have worked to make the transition as seamless as possible for our users, and this change should have a minimal impact on your experience with the site.
RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together. If you have questions regarding this change please email them to feedback(a)rootsweb.com.
Thanks,
Tim Sullivan
CEO
The Generations Network, Inc.

Follow-up on RootsWeb Domain Change
March 17th, 2008 by Anna
There has been a lot of discussion regarding the post from Tim about the domain change and I wanted to follow-up on some of the miscommunications that are circulating.
- www.rootsweb.com will still bring you to the RootsWeb homepage after the domain change. We will be redirecting all of the old URLs.
- We are not changing anything on RootsWeb other than the URL. We will still offer the same features and support.
- RootsWeb is now and will remain a free online experience.
- Your data will not be taken away from you. We host the mailing lists, message boards, sites etc. but you own the information that you post or upload.
- As some of you found out, some URLs on the www.rootsweb.ancestry.com domain will already work. This was necessary as we were testing the new URLs and preparing for the change.
If you have questions that I haven’t addressed please send them to feedback(a)rootsweb.com.

I visitor to my site sent me an Excel file 5 columns wide by 1200 rows
or something like that. She had extracted family info from a local
paper and over time added items about related families.
I uploaded it to the server and when I click on the link to it from my
Links page, Safari automatically downloads the file to the users
computer. Firefox asks if you want to download it. I haven't tested it
in another browser yet but I'm going to assume they will all behave
similarly.
Is there a way around this? I really just want it to open in a new
window. I'm tickled that FreeFind indexed it so that anyone searching
on a name will be able to find it. But clicking on the link that
FreeFind provides just downloads the file too. And if you're searching
multiple names, the file will be downloaded each time. I don't have a
way to test it on a dial-up, so I don't know how slowly it downloads.

Tina can you explain this a bit more? I personally do not have a
problem (yet) with the concept of their banners (I work in advertising
so I know all about the importance of corporate branding) but if these
"clauses" mean advertising, or really annoying junk cluttering up my
pages, then that's another story. What did you mean about the redirect
URL?
Although I am not the HTML guru I wish I was and my 11yo site is
desperate for a makeover (you'd think I could get one of my co-workers
to help me with this hahaha) I have felt limited on the Rootsweb
server. It sounds good that the new server has more options for us.

First, thanks for taking care of us Tina. As always, I know we are in
good hands with your guidance. But I think that it is confusing
because you have taken the step of purchasing a new domain for us.
Since there was no discussion on this list before you made the
purchase, I am confused at to why the purchase was made.
Is it because of the recent announcements about banners being added to
our sites? I know that with past changes other states have moved off
the Rootsweb server. But after things have died down and the people
have gotten accustomed to the changes made by Rootsweb/Ancestry, life
continued to go on as normal as it possibly could (usually, anyway).
Will this time be like the others? Or are there bigger (and possibly
worse) things coming on the horizon that we in the northwoods of
Wisconsin can't see?
By moving our sites, what do we gain? Will there be new file
extensions and other technology (?) that we would be able to utilize
that we couldn't do by staying on the Rootsweb server? As an example,
I've seen the WPA Grave project that Iowa has undertaken and have been
very impressed with it. Will projects such as this be a possibility
for us on a new server?
On the flip side, what about the little things, like counters and
search engines on our current sites on Rootsweb. What about message
boards and mail lists? Will we have to hunt down new tools such as
these to put on our pages? Another concern is how much it will cost
us to be on this new server with our own domain name. (Do I even have
the terminology right on this? - I've never done this before either.)
Will we be limited space or charged extra for what we use over and
above what we are allowed, if we happen to put alot of data online?
Will new passwords and user names be provided? How easy will it be to
FTP?
As you can see, there has been a whole gamut of questions that have
been running through my mind since the first announcements have come
through to our list. I am certainly not trying to be difficult or to
put you on the spot in any way, Tina. I trust your judgment and I
know you have been a wonderful leader over the years. I would just
like to have a little clarification on these concerns and what has
brought about these changes.
If there is a webpage somewhere that you trust with telling us the
facts, I'd be more than willing to read the information there. I know
you must be extremely busy right now with everything that's on your
plate.
Thanks again, Tina, for all that you have done for us and for the
project. I'm sorry this has become such a long message, but your
thoughts are appreciated in helping us to understand what all of this
means.

Hello Tina,
I have to admit that because I have not been a very active "keeper" of the
Lincoln County site I am having trouble following this whole discussion. In
essence I do not know what I need to do with the Lincoln County site and
furthermore, I don't know how to do whatever it is that I need to do.
Can you please explain all this to me...
Thank you, Sharon
