Debbie and all
copyright laws have changed a bit, but still remain basically the same.
Anyone can create anything, and copyright it. As a graphic artist, I try to stay current on this issue.
Basically, anything created after Jan 1, 1978 is copyrighted until 70 years after the death of the creator. For other material, when there was no specific creator, the copyright was for 95 or 120 years, which ever was shorter, depending on whether the creation was registered etc
For anything created before Jan 1, 1978, those copyright laws were amended. Normally, a copyright was for 28 years and could be renewed in the last year. Most copyrights for things created before 1978 would last 75 years, and could be renewed for 20 more years, so the maximum copyright would be 95 years, but often copyrights did not get renewed.
If a map was originally published more than 95 years ago, you would be safe to use it, reproduce it, and yes, even sell your reproductions.
Also, a gentle reminder that the emphasis of copyright laws is to protect the creator from someone stealing his work and MAKING MONEY from it.
Works can be used as references, quotes can be used (a book reviewer can quote from a text and not be violating copyright laws).
For a more complete description, here is the website that I use for reference on copyrights.

Hello to all,
Thank God for Shelly Green. She is my lifesaver! I continue to work full
time at the clinic and hospital.
Some day I will slow down or try retirement...another 3 years! I have been
busy with family issues, my youngest sister just passed away after a 2 1/2
illness, this was on December 17th....on the 11th of December we had to put our
15 year old Beagle, Maggie to sleep. So needless to say, the end of 2006
and the start of 2007 have been extremely hard. Hopefully I can start working on
the site this year!
Sharon from Lincoln County, Wisconsin
I will contact RW and have them reissue the password to you .. will cc you
privately .. Stay tuned. Thanks for letting me know!

Winnebago here.
I'm very involved with the census project hosted by Rootsweb.com and
also I hold public office in Winneconne which is much more time
consuming than you could imagine. I have been very active in the
Winneconne Historical Society and am maintaining their web site as well
as being active with the Historic Preservation Committee in town. This
committee has just had an ordinance passed and are working on getting
our first local historic sites named.
I'm also the coordinator for Wisconsin for the USGenWeb obit project and
want to share a concern with everyone. The obit project can only link
to obituaries that are in the archives or on a county page so all the
obituaries that are done on message boards (which by the way are owned
by Ancestry) cannot be linked. I've worked with Joan from
Adams/Marquette to get her obits from the message board into the
archives so they can be linked and I'm more than willing to do this for
any county that would be interested (only obits pre-1931). I believe
one great advantage to having the obit project is that a person can go
to one place and find obits from all of the counties. This is
especially great if there was movement of a family.
I feel rather guilty because I haven't aggressively added much to the
Winnebago page this year but I now feel that I've been too neglectful
and will spend some time on it.

Well, the holiday season is over and I hope you all had a

And although I know we all hate them, I think its time for a

I would also love to hear what you have all been up to .. what
wonderful new resources have been added, what success stories

Thanks!

Ozaukee County checking in.
It sure sounds like everyone has awfully busy lives -
parents, kids, grandkids, pets, careers, etc. And if
you're like me, don't you find that genealogy is a
wonderful way to step away from everything else even
if it's just for a little while?
All kinds of information has been added to the site of
the smallest county in the state. As more researchers
have found their way to Ozaukee County, many have been
kind enough to contribute family and area information
to the site.
A wonderful volunteer is helping me transcribe local
news from microfilmed copies of old area newspapers.
Two different areas of the county published newspapers
so we have our work cut out, but it's so interesting
and I think a very valuable resource. I'm glad to
learn about the Obituary Project and will work to
extract the obits from what we've done so far and add
them.
I'm also transcribing the 1905 state census for
Lincoln County where my dad's family was from.
I think we should all be proud of the great job we're
doing!

Hi
I am here covering ......Clark, Iron, Oneida & Vilas counties; answering
queries and adding info as it is submitted by viewers.
The latest project was the addition of the 1912-1913 Rhinelander City &
Oneida Cty Directory to Oneida County site.

Tina,
Hi! I'm here. This year hasn't been a large on one the website - I've
gotten some wonderful new cemetery transcriptions that others have donated,
and a few more leads on others. Anytime I'm in county, I add some more
tombstone pictures, too. Mostly, I'm dealing with my (young) mother, who
has a serious mental illness. This has taken a large amount of my time and
emotional energy. Besides raising two young children, ... what more do I
say? Thanks to Robin Kaspar, who allowed me to burn off some frustration by
posting biographies to Grant Co. site (my husband's ancestral home) this
year.
I also want to chime in that Mari Modlin (Crawford County) is experiencing
some serious computer problems (virus). She's working on getting her
computer up and running again, and also dealing with some physical
difficulties. I'm watching her mailing lists for her, so don't count her
out - she's just temporarily down!

Hi everyone, I'm still here...Adams and Marquette Co's online collection is
growing nicely. Each site is around 800pp now, alot of cemeteries, old
newspaper articles and county history biographies. I feel something is
missing if I don't add something to the sites at least every week or so,
and thank heavens for volunteers who help with that effort!

Hi everyone!
Still living and breathing here!!! lol... The Shawano site is going well...
we just add odds and ends as we get them... current projects include the 1930
census as well as obituaries, etc. We have over 11,000 obits and queries on
the Message Boards so if they lived or died in Shawano, the surname SHOULD
appear in one of the entries up there... and always looking for more church
centennials or booklets... trying to get more old photos up and online, too.
And the other day we updated the front page of the Florence site... with the
supporting pages to following shortly so all the graphics match again....
and accidentally tripped over some more bios to add to the site as well.... I
know, I said I would baby sit the site but I just want to get it updated for
the researchers there.... not all that many, but they deserve an updated site.
Personal life -- let see, our daughter moved back to New England to help out
-- we're just not as young and spry as we used to be!!! Her hubby is
finishing up his degree out West and should be here in the next few months... and
we, too have been enjoying the record warmth in Connecticut... but my dream of
a horse drawn sleigh ride for Christmas didn't happen... lol... not even a
flurry... nor a rumor of flurry...
And I miss all the chit-chat emails from the Wisconsin list so the roll call
is very welcomed...
So, Shawano and Florence checked in...
Anne
Tina,
Sorry about not filling things in on the counties. Calumet
has just had a bunker load added of obits, Anniversary newspaper
articles, Wedding articles, etc. that were donated to the website.
Sheboygan County is in the process of getting a 1910 city directory
added. I am just finishing up the R's and starting the S's. I also
added obits, wedding write-ups and some misc. baptismal records that
were contributed to Sheboygan as well.. So we have been busy over here.
I agree with no snow for Christmas, that is literally the
only time of the year that I am happy to see snow, on Christmas eve,
any time before or after that and I don't need it, just on Christmas
eve. Wishful thinking on my part to only have snow one day a year.<G>

Adding obits and whatever else I find time for. Just trying to keep my head
above water right now. I took up a new hobby this last year - training my
dog for agility competition. Keeps me off the computer quite a bit some
weeks (esp. those weeks with agility trials on the weekends) but the new
hobby is probably better for my health than hunching over my desk for hours
at a time. ....... although it brings something new to stress about. And
in case anyone else is into agility trials, my 2.5 year old/ 12 pound dog
is doing quite well. We started competing in September in CPE and December
in AKC. She's earned NAJ (jumpers title) in AKC and is currently at Level
4 in CPE competition. :-)
Heading for Wisconsin in 2 weeks - keep that snow away then please.
Linda
Marathon County here - I haven't been up to much of anything. I'm helping
Sharon add a 1905 census to her web pages. I keep busy with requests for
information.

Hi Tina,
I am here...
I don't feel I can extend myself any further than I have... Currently I am
working on scanning in maps and reconstructing them into jpg files for Lac
Courte Oreilles Tribal Historical Office... they are called Trygg Maps and these
were maps drawn from the original land survey's (up here in the 1850's) and
show original land cover (pinelands) here and show Indian Trails and
homesteads... interesting maps.
I have also been involved in local historical presentations down in Barron
County... talked bout Native History on Monday Night.
If that was not enough, my 90 year old father decided in November to climb
on the roof and start re-shingling himself... he fell off and will spend the
rest of his days in a home...kind of an ironic way for an Olympic Ski Jumper
to go... he is taking it well, and is laughing about it too, but know that his
time is now short.

It's MAK - what a year - I don't have any stories or anything exciting to report - life is just flying by.
I have been maintaining the genealogy websites and working and traveling for business and working and maintaining the websites for USC NROTC alumni and working - (grin) - sounds like I am in a rut.
Of course - there are always new gramma photos coming from the kids who are in Washington DC and just here in LA for Christmas and New Years! Sorry the links don't work on the page - but my professional website was hijacked and I am in the process of moooooooooving to a new server - so excuse the remodeling (grin) http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/MAK-roots/P4/polywog/MAK/gramma.html
If you have time - here is a touching military tribute - http://www.iwo.com/heroes.htm Semper Fi!!!
R/S MAK
ps Tina - my hand is NOT up in the air volunteering this time - sorry, but I just took another part time job - and it is up to 30plus hours a week, on top of my fiber art consulting jobs... I be a busy beaver -
as for Winter - it has been in the 80's here - and I am loving life large (grin)... Of course it has been really cold at night (in the 40's) but I can bundle up in front of the fireplace (hee hee hee) - having fun in Southern California -

Hi Tina,
I'm busy too, and another 'sandwich generationer'....my soon-to-be-93 year old mom lives with me now, and keeps me on my toes, and on my days off from work, I get my newest grandson to 'play' with! Ha! We are just lovin' it, especially because this little guy is one of those babies, that you can just say boo to, and he will burst out in the funniest laugh.
In other things, I have started conducting cemetery walks for our county's oldest and largest cemetery. Twice a year I hold my walks in Rienzi cemetery. This is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the state, final home for one of Wisconsin's territorial governors, who also founded the cemetery itself, and ran the territorial government from his home here.
But the fascinating part of this, that I think all genealogists can relate to, is that when I find a stone that looks interesting or different, I will look up what I can about the people buried there, and have found some rather interesting stories.........for example, one person's obit actually was headlined "Dug His Own Grave" and then tells how the man had bought his plot earlier, and wanted it lined with bricks (in the days with no perpetual care) so he dug out his grave, and lined it bottom and sides with brick, then filled it in and waited....for 16 years, before it became his final home.l
I also discovered by accident, that when the cemeteries in the county were all transcribed in the 1980's, by several different organizations, they all missed one cemetery.......so I went out and copied the inscriptions, and am in the process of printing out the results.
I am now known locally as the 'cemetery lady'. don't know if that's good or bad.
have badly neglected my website, because I feel it's time for an overhaul, and don't want to tackle that just yet. But my job hours just did a massive shift, and now I have Sunday's off again, so will get back at the website soon.
My goal for the past 5 years, has been to take a photo of every cemetery entrance in the county. 10 down and 110 to go! HA!
Oh yes, and one other thing. I finally finished off one of my family histories, and my personal copy shouldl be arriving tomorrow from the printer. I've been in labor with this book for 5 years, but I think it will be worth it....all 390(?) pages of it, full of lots of the Blarney that runs in the family.
Now, what am I going to do this year?

I to have also been trying to reach Marion, as well. Sadly, I believe we
will need to place the county up for adoption. I have the passwords, and if
I can be of assistance contact me.
