Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Tina,
I am sorry, you are correct. I should have went and checked this
out for myself instead of sitting on my can doing nothing. I even have the
helpdesk bookmarked, but never thought of checking it first.
Just I have gotten to use to shipping an e-mail to the state list
because I knew someone would be willing to help or may have had an answer.
In the end though, I slacked on my own responsibility and for that I am sorry,

Mari,
Actually I have been with Genweb now for 7 years and have dealt
with the mailing list issue before. I don't worry much about them when the
rejects arrive, it is when the people start using the archives and
realizing they aren't getting the mail and then e-mailing and complaining
to me that I feel it is my job to step in and try to get this fixed for them.
I guess I just feel since I am the admin for the mailing list,
then in addition to making sure the list is used properly, it is also my
job to make sure the ones who want to get it do. My husband often tells me
I worry to much about stuff that I can't control, perhaps this is one of
those times.
So I guess I can say I have been trenched for 7+ years now.<VBG>

Tina,
I sure hope my remark didn't prompt this!
While I stated that I usually let AOL bounces run their course, that in no
way says that I am "asleep at the switch" in dealing with my list(s) as
admin.
The only reason I said what I did, is that AOL, at least from my
experience, habitually, and frequently bounces list mail for whatever
reason. It's been an ongoing problem for years, and while I do know about
the problem, and RW's strivings to eliminate the problems, doesn't change
the way I as list admin still have to deal with it.
Until it IS resolved, there is literally not much an admin can do except to
hope.

Debie,
This is on the Rootsweb Help Desk

Mail Lists:
2004-08-11
AOL receiving mail from LISTS8 list server updated 11 Aug 2004 early am
AOL had been rejecting mail from one of RootsWeb's mailing list servers for
the better part of a week. This issue now seems to have been resolved and we
thank AOL for their work in addressing this matter.
We had sidelined amounts of that email and are now delivering this mail,
however, lists subscribers should double-check their subscription status via
Password Central
Hope it is helpful.

Hi All,
Once again it's me and I have another question for all of you. Has anyone
else in Wisconsin, or I guess anywhere else for that matter been having
problems with AOL rejecting letters back to you from your county mailing
lists? I don't mean for one or two AOL addresses, but 21 on one list and 25
on the other and 5 from the third. It is literally everyone signed up to
the mailing lists for Sheboygan County, Calumet County and Town of Mitchell
who has an AOL address.
Starting a week or so ago, every time someone sends a message to one of
the mailing lists, AOL has rejected it and Rootsweb in turn sends it back
to me. The original part of the message states the service for the AOL
address is unavailable, then it lists all of the AOL users addresses signed
onto the mailing list. When you read down further in this bounced e-mail,
it states it is being rejected due to bulk spam e-mail being sent from this
address.
I am not sure what is going on, but I archive all of my mailing lists and
I even went and double checked that the list wasn't being used as a spam
type thing without my knowing. All of the letters in the archive are
normal, genealogy related letters, I hadn't missed any form of spamming
going on, yet AOL is not allowing the mailing list to come through to it's
users.
Now several of the AOL users had started to complain because they had
posted to the mailing list and never saw their letter hitting the list.
While others just thought the mailing list was just silent. I did contact
all of the users that were shown to be rejected on the rejection e-mail and
it turns out several of them can't even remember the last time they
received anything from the mailing list.
As solutions we have tried the following, they tried adding the mailing
list address to their address book, which AOL says will allow for mail from
that address to come through, they have also tried contacting AOL
themselves. I have tried contacting AOL and since I don't own the host for
the mailing list, they told me there isn't anything I can do. I did send a
letter to Rootsweb, but haven't heard back from them yet.
Is anyone else having the same problem or have you had the same problem
perhaps in the past and how have you fixed it, if you fixed it?
Any ideas would be appreciated,

Hi Listers,
For those of you who may not be into Golf, I'm not, so I figure there must
be others as well, I thought I would share this. This weekend is the PGA
tournament. This year it is being held in a little unincorporated blink
called Haven in Sheboygan County. Although Haven itself can be missed if
you blink, Whistling Straits Golf Course is literally the only other thing
in Haven if you take away the three bars. However the area around there is
simply beautiful. So, if you happen to see the PGA while surfing the TV
during the Olympics, you will see some of the beauty I am blessed with
being able to see any time I want to take a ride. I am about 10 - 15
minutes away to the south.
I just wanted to share this with all you, it isn't very often Sheboygan
County makes the news for something other than a tragedy,
Have a great weekend,
Debie Blindauer
Calumet & Sheboygan Counties
P.S. For those of you interested in the players, Tiger Wood did eat at
Luigi's. Luigi traded Tiger's meal for a photo with him. The big
news....... Tiger left a $20.00 tip. The same night Phil Mickelson however
left an $86.00 tip. Wish I was waiting that table.<G>
Debie,
Rootsweb recently moved many of the lists to a new server.. list8. I
believe they were the list beginning with L-Z.
http://lists8.rootsweb.com/tools/WISHEBOY
I be guessing that is the one you are asking about. If others, and they
fall within the L-Z range change the list number in the url to 8 and you
should be all set.
T.

Tina,
That wasn't the url I normally used, I always used this one
{http://lists2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listowner/wisheboy/listutil.pl}, so I
went to the url I have always used, plugged in the 8 in place of a 2 and
wahla! I got my utility page back. Went and tried with the three other ones
I had the same problem with and wahla! that fixed all of them.
Thank you very much, I must have missed something as I didn't know
anything about the change. Thanks again for the prompt reply and the help,
