Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Anybody out there belong to the list admin's mailing list?
If so, can you tell me how long their latest computer problem, hence my
county mailing list, will be out of commission. It's been a week
already, and the list still doesn't get mail, nor can I get to my
utility page.

I just finished converting all my contributor addresses to this virtual file
method. 654 files later, it's done. I was hoping to find a way to use this
method in a single Excel chart but apparently it won't work. I went to
webdeveloper.com to get some assistance and all I was told was to use a
database or Java. I'm on a Rootsweb server and RW doesn't support databases
or much of anything but the basics. The ironic part of going to all this
trouble just to save myself a big headache when someone asks to update their
addy (and I didn't think about software to search and replace across all
files) is that probably 80% of these addresses are no good anymore since
they're so old.

Jenny - Front page does that - but it will insert all
sorts of other code and make your pages loading time
increase significantly. (Big frown)
To avoid this, I create files to insert on the pages.
Here is how to do it. Create a folder called ssi in
your main directory. In the ssi folder, create a file
for each contributor, example: v-kuehl.html
In the file, place the information which you would
like on your page (ex)

</strong> </p>
Then on the page and location you want the
information, insert the following source code:
<!--#include virtual="/~wiwood/ssi/v-kuehl.html"-->
And it will print exactly what is on the page - when
you want to change the email - you change it only on
one page. I have files for headers and footers - so I
only make one change instead of hundreds of pages.
Learned this on the editing staff of a project which
has since went by the wayside.
Hope this helps. R/S MAK

Jenny and Jeannette,
Thank you for a great question and terrific answer. I am also interested, with
continuous e-mail and other data changes. I do my pages from scratch in HTML
and Dreamerweaver uses that code, which is my preference. In looking at the
various websites selling Dreanweaver programs, I noticed several versions.
Which one are you using and which would you suggest? Again, thanks.

I started using Dreamweaver with version 4.0
I then upgraded to MX and now am using 2004MX.
(If not mistaken, BBEdit for the Mac also offers a search/replace
function... This is what I used to use before switching to
Dreamweaver...)

I use HomeSite to do that. It comes with Macromedia products (Dreamweaver, Studio MX, etc., but you have to install it separately off the CD).

Hi again,
I have another question for the group, does anyone know of a program that
will search through the source code of a group of webpages and do a find and
replace? I have a contributor who changed their email address and I was
hoping for a more efficient way to change all of her addresses other than
one page at a time. VisualPage will find and replace on the webpage, but
won't search the source code.
Thanks,
Jenny
Hi Debie and all,
Mari is indeed doing Dane County, I received word this weekend from Mari
that she has a family emergency, and she is away from the computer for a
bit. Debie, I am sure she will be in contact with you as soon as she is
able. I placed her on -Digest mode for this list.

Tina,

list and don't want to bother her if she is off for a bit. I just have a
question about Dane county plat maps.

Hi Jenny and all..
Lori is correct, many people have been struggling with the problem that Jenny outlined. I asked a fellow CC in the Project who has been troubleshooting this elsewhere, to address it.
This is her response.
"The issue seems to be with Windows XP home. It doesn't matter which browser
you use, the logo won't show up. I can view the logo just fine with WIndows
2000 Pro here at work.
I took a look at the source code....first thing I noticed is there is no
"alt" tag. She needs to add the following to her code:
<img src="graphics/outlogo.gif" alt="WIGenWeb logo">
This should fix it, since the logo is an older graphic. If it doesn't solve
the problem, the someone needs to save the logo in PSP 6 or a similar
program, and send it to Jenny to reupload.
Marce"
--
Hope this helps! If I can assist with providing a "newer" version logo, let me know.
Tina
There have been similar problems on other pages in USGW. Generally speaking, some people see the logos and for others they don't show up and appear to be stripped of the source code. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I know you aren't the only one. We've been trying to figure out what is going on.

I can't figure out what's going on but I can't the round WIGenWeb logo to
show up on my webpages. This is a recent problem since it's always shown up
just fine previously. When I try to upload a page with the logo, the code
for the image seems to be stripped away. I use Symantec VisualPage to
create my webpages. I thought maybe it was doing strange things and
removing the code when I saved it. So then I tried a plain text editor and
the code was still there but just to be sure I still deleted the old code
and pasted in new code. I usually use WS-FTP to upload my pages but I used
the publishing feature of VisualPage to upload and again the code is gone.
I then tried downloading the green logo (I've been using the blue one) and
using it, again no logo once it's uploaded. I then renamed the image but
still it doesn't show up. I normally use Opera as my web browser so I
decided to view the page with IE thinking maybe Opera had gone wonky, but no
logo with IE either. In fact I can't even view the blue logo on the
volunteer page of the WIGenWeb. Can anyone help me? Is anyone else
experiencing this?
