Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Hi all,
I just want to share with you that somebody just submitted baby pictures
to the Kenosha site... the baby was born last month LOL!
I pleasantly emailed back and told her how much I just loved receiving
her daugher's baby pictures and that I'm glad a new little Kenoshan was
born and that she is a happy new mom... but that it is my policy not to
post anything about living people unless they give me their consent...
and that she is too young to add to the birth list!
The baby pics where adorable, however and brightened my day! LOL!

Kenosha/Racine
I would follow the - Do on to others rule - (grin)
I would ask the original poster to post to my site -
and I would be sure to point to the other site - where
obviously there is more information....
I would also ask the other CC to point researchers to
my site -
If they say no, I would post a query pointing to the
site - problem is, if the site goes away, the link
will be broke - but it would be better than nothing
(grin)...

Since I forwarded the first email, it is only fair to
forward this as well.
In response to numerous questions from users, the
email below was posted on the RW Help Desk, which
means the Family Trees are still available to be
searched manually at no charge.
While I accept that this is what they will do - I
wonder if they were going to do this before the
"uproar" -
If so, the original page was sure misleading, and more
importantly, Ancestry still will make money off of
submitted material. It is similar to the FTM CDs -
you donate years of hard work, and they cash in on
it....
THINK TWICE before "buying" into this system....
Again, these are just my thoughts - again, below is
the message, read it for yourself and decide....
--
A response to your Help Desk message, "One World
Tree," of Mon, 3 May 2004, at 11:15 a.m. follows:
-------------------------
Trees uploaded to either side (RW/Ancestry) are
visible from both sides.
Ancestry is *not* charging for access or selling
trees: access will remain free from both the RootsWeb
and Ancestry side as it has always been.
What Ancestry is offering for an extra charge is
access to a special search engine to search the trees
for you. Folks can still search the trees manually or
browse the trees for free the same way they always
have.
Think of it like a research assistant: you can hire
someone to help you look for your ancestors, or you
can research yourself for free. That's essentially
what it is, except that it's computerized, not human.

Hi,
I'd contact the original submitter and ask permission to repost to the new
site.... and probably cc the email to the county co-ordinator as a courtesy for
her posting it.... and definitely mention a credit to both in the reposting to
your site.
I've "refound" obits I've put online in other sites, too and I don't "mind"
but it is nice to see a little credit where credit is due line with them in
their new location.
And, if you hear nothing back, you can extract the pertinent data and then
put a link in there to the full obit on the original site... or even obtain the
real obit from the local library and enter it in your site from the original
source....
Just my thoughts....
Anne
I received an obituary today that says it was originally posted on another
county website in another state. The deceased had lived most of her life in
Grant Co. and the submitter thought it should also be posted on my site.
Would you just copy and paste it? Would you put a link to the other site's
posting? Would you contact that county coordinator and ask permission to
copy and paste? Would you contact the original submitter and ask permission
to copy and paste?

I always feel safer, if I can have my own copy, instead of just
'linking' to a document, so I would eliminate the choice of making a
link to the obit.
The person who originally submitted the obit, would be my first person
to ask, and I would ask them if they would just send a copy of the obit
to you, for inclusion on your website also.
Go direct to the source, whenever possible.
If you can't find the source, then writing the county coordinator for a
copy is your second step. It might be understood, but I want to speak
clearly, that you are asking for a copy of the obit, and not her page
set-up that contains the obit. Tell the cc that you have tried
unsuccessfully to contact the original contributor.
And a big thank you would go to the person who brought this obit to your
attention.

The following explanation of the change at Ancestry was offered by Megan on
the Listowners list:
"Ancestry is *not* charging for access to trees or selling trees: access will
remain free from both the RootsWeb and Ancestry side as it has always been.
"What Ancestry is offering for an extra charge is access to a special search
engine to search the trees for you. Folks can still search the trees
manually or browse the trees for free the same way they always have.
"Think of it as a research assistant: you can hire someone to help you look
for your ancestors, or you can research yourself for free. Hiring a human
research assistant doesn't sell them the data being researched, or change
the rules so that only they are allowed to look.
That's essentially what it is, except that it's computerized, not human."

Mari,
Thanks for the info -- I followed the instructions and they said the database
will be removed this evening......
It's not that I don't mind sharing the info, I don't have a problem with that
-- I'm not that way. I do mind someone marketing or charging someone for my
work. That's not why I do genealogy or why I host genealogy sites. I already
pay Ancestry over $125 a year to use their databases... and now they are
going to charge people for a search engine on a free site? For my $125 a year, I
sure hope that includes the search engine!
I have data on my county page -- I wouldn't DREAM of having the data posted
but charging people to use "an assistant" to help them search... (not that you
could or would!) Personally, I think they have just gotten too big and they
have the corner on the genealogy market... and they know it.
Thanks again,
Anne, now deleted from the Mother of all files...

Also, please don't confuse the WorldConnect family tree
<http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/> with OWT.
As far as I can see, they are not the same. (although I've been wrong
*just once* before!) :-D
Hope this helps someone.

MAK,
THANK YOU for the heads up -- I always thought the day would come that they
would start charging....
Problem: My ged is up there but for the life of me, I can't delete it!
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=taylorczaplewski&id=I323
Any idea how to delete? I followed their instructions and the ADVANCED tab
isn't there nor is my tree listed.... I always thought I had contributed it
through Rootsweb, not Ancestry....
HELP!!!
Anne
I am forwarding this to all my lists - and to people
who may be interested in this new change - it goes
against what USGenWeb stands for - FREE genealogy....
Please pass to ALCON - (all concerned)
+++++
If you submitted a family tree to Ancestry.com (or
MyFamily.com) for free viewing by researchers, that's
all about to change. Later this month Ancestry plans
to begin charging researchers to view your trees.
If you don't want that, you'll have to remove your
tree.
Go to:
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/
Click on "What's a Preview"
Scroll down to #3: Have you already submitted a family
tree?
Click on "view our checklist"
A few lines down you will see:
"If for any reason you do not want your tree to be
part of the new OneWorldTree service, you must delete
it from the Ancestry World Tree database by
tentatively May 21, 2004."
There are instructions for removing your tree:
http://ancestry.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ancestry.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php...
