Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi all,
Tonight, a page was shared with me. It got me to
thinking ... You all know that is dangerous,
especially given my penchant for cows <VBG> !
but.. does the State of WI have records similar to
what this page presents?
"During the 19th Century and early 20th Century, many
farmers let their cattle graze in unfenced areas.
Branding was used to identify the owners of the
cattle"

Hi,
After having a rough few weeks, I'm finally getting back to some long
neglected tasks... only to find this in today's email:
<<I might have already asked this or something but um like I need all the
information on the all the people on the shawano obituaries could you help?>>
OK, I replied nicely that if they needed a couple I might be able to help...
they replied that they would like them all -- 6000+ I guess... I explained
what MESSAGE BOARDS are for... If I didn't know better, I'd think this was one
of my kids trying to make me smile today!!! LOL... Last week, it was a
familiar pain in the rump roast, wanting me to correct all the old censuses so his
families could be found... including correcting the 1880 LDS online census...
Yep, co-cordinators = superheros!

Hi.. how did you scan for the spyware? do you mean, do a search for them? or ?
Thanks Brendakwm
kingsley(a)aol.com
If it makes you feel better, I had to de-install Zone Alarm. If it was
running, I had no sound on my computer and it was really a pain in the rear.
I'm pretty pleased with Ad Aware and Spybot. I do tend to run both though,
and at any given time one picks up more than the other one did.
I downloaded the Google browser bar, and the new one there zaps popups, but
you can easily activate them for certain websites. That's real nice. I've
had problems with some of the commercial popup zappers because you need to
utilize the popups for some websites (like my bank's.)

HEADS UP - MULTIPLE EMAIL POSTING - Tirenia DeSmedt
<undeniablyrenia(a)yahoo.com> has sent the same query to
96 Message Boards in Wisconsin asking for info on
RUIDL or DeSmedts. I found it on one of my boards and
did a quick on-line search:
The only WI counties I found RUIDL in were Jefferson
and Milwaukee. (my reply posted in Jefferson)
The only WI counties I found DeSmedt in were Milwaukee
and Sheboygan. (My reply posted in Milwaukee)
I have deleted her emails off the Wood, Portage, and
Monroe Message Boards. If you your county Message
Board - and actively respond to queries - you might
want to keep that in mind before you do the research
like I did. Fortunately, it was a quick search -
(grin), and I didn't want to just delete the info - so
I posted it to the appropriate Message Boards
(Jefferson, and Milwaukee)....

Hi, I just wanted to send a quick email and warn
people about SPYing on the internet - My computer kept
going slower and slower and bogged down, and sometimes
would just FREEZE up - well, I didn't know why -
thought I was doing something wrong.
It was suggested that I scan for SPYWARE - there were
61 spys on my computer - and most of them were active.
I got the SPYWARE NUKER
http://www.spywarenuker.com/overture.php and a POP-UP
NUKER - both tonight - they were not free but seemed
to get rid of the problem - of course after I did that
I found ZoneAlarm (below) - rats.... it does all the
above does and more...
I signed up for a Free 45 day trial with ZoneAlarm -
Perhaps now I won't get so much internet garbage
coming in and out of my life.... IF it is doing a
great job at the end of the trial - then I will
purchase it. WOW, just in the last 5 minutes since I
installed, it stopped 3 intruders - that is wild.

The Jewish National and University Library, David and
Fela Shapell Family Digitization Project, is pleased
to announce the opening to the public of the Historic
Hebrew Newspapers website at:
http://jnul.huji.ac.il/dl/newspapers/
The aim of this site is to provide open access to
images of the major titles of the early Hebrew press
(19th and early 20th century).
These newspapers contain a wealth of primary material
on Diaspora and Land of Israel history of the period.
Access to them has, until now, been limited to a small
number of research libraries which held either the
crumbling originals or microfilm copies.
The first stage of the project, now completed,
contains:
Halevanon (1863-1886) 770 issues, approx. 7,200
pages.
Hamagid (1856-1903) 2265 issues, approx. 19,500
pages.
Havazelet (1863-1911) 1857 issues, approx. 14,200
pages.
Each newspaper has indexes by common era date, Jewish
calendar date and volume/issue numbers. Partial author
and subject access is provided via an index created by
Yad Ben-Zvi and computerized by the University of
Haifa in the 1980's. This index has now been upgraded
by the JNUL to a web version, and enhanced with links
to the fulltext of each article. This index is
limited, however, to Eretz Israel topics in these
three newspapers.
The runs of these journals are based primarily on the
collection of the JNUL, with missing issues filled in
with the help of other institutions and private
collectors. A few issues are still missing or partial
and we welcome the help of other institutions in
filling these gaps (for a list of missing issues see
http://jnul.huji.ac.il/dl/newspapers/missing-issues.htm)
An additional three titles are currently being
prepared for addition to the site: Hazefirah, Hazevi
and Hameliz.
The site itself is entirely in Hebrew.
Technical information:
Viewing the newspaper pages themselves requires the
use of a special Java TIFF viewer which is downloaded
automatically into your browser the first time you
view an image. This software does not remain in your
computer after you leave the site. The first time you
access a newspaper image you will be asked to accept
a digital certificate before the image viewer
software, viewONE, is able to be used on your
computer. Your browser must also be set for Java
enabled. This viewer provides enhanced functionality
such as the ability to zoom on the images, adjust
brightness and print selected sections.

Hi Tracy,
The NC had sent them out from a private list that he put together and
unfortunately some people were missed. If you would like to obtain a copy,
you can write to:
USGenWebNews(a)cox.net or I would be glad to send you a copy of mine. You
can also opt out at this addy.
After polling a good deal of members, I have voted yes on using the
membership list, which should be much more accurate on email addys.
I did receive a good deal of responses, and the majority were very positive
about the newsletter. I found that some just want to make sure they have a
way to opt out, and also learned that spam filters are catching the
newsletter, which needs to be worked out.
Actually, I think that it went over well for a first mailing. Obviously
there are some glitches, that I'm sure will be worked out in time. Nothing
starts out perfect. <g>
I would also like to remind you, that this is a USGW Project Newsletter. It
was done with the hopes of providing good and helpful information to the
many volunteers of this project. If you would like to add an article, or
have comment on what you'd like to see, just send the NC, or any AB member a
note.
Thank you for allowing me to hear your opinions.
Jan

You have by now, all received a copy of this newsletter, which I do believe
is an excellent tool for the USGW. I would like to know your opinion, on
whether you would like to see this continue to be distributed thru email.
I'm a bit torn on my opinion, and not having heard from anyone, I'm hoping
that you can tell me what you think before I vote on this issue.
Thanks, and private email is fine!
