Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
For those of you who have been notified that
individuals are having problems accessing the FTP
records filed on rootsweb in the USGenWeb Archives,
here is something to note. Please feel free to pass
it on to your Mailing Lists.

Marcia,
I just figured out my problem downloading the FTP
cemetery pages on the Monroe Co. site! Here is one to
keep for future reference!
I connect to the internet using a DSL Cable modem high
speed connection, my operating system on my computer
is Microsoft Windows XP, and my web browser is
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. My problem was that I
couldn't access FTP sites and make downloads.
Answer- In the "Internet Options" folder of Internet
Explorer there is an "Advanced" tab. There are many
options that can be checked on or off on the advanced
page. Under the "Browsing" heading of that section is
a box that must be checked on if using a firewall or
DSL connection. It reads, "Use passive FTP(for
firewall and DSL modem compatability)."
I have had no problems since turning on this feature,
maybe this will help someone else who is ripping out
their hair!
Thanks again,
James

Tina and all,
My preference would be for WIGEN-L to remain archived. Since its main concern is the business of the WIGenWeb Project, it is important for a record to be kept that is accessible to all WIGenWeb members. A list archive is the simplist way to do that, since the computers do it for us.
The archive has been very useful to me on several occasions when I needed to refer to a message that I had already deleted from my inbox, or that was for some reason culled out by the spam filter my mail service uses.

Hi all,
I asked the archive accessibility question of Rootsweb. If the list
becomes an unarchived list than no one would have access to its
archives because it is simply not archived. That makes obviously a lot
of sense. <smile> I am told that if the list is unarchived than
Personalized Mailing Lists (PML) is disabled.
This is a closed subscription list and the choice is yours as to
whether to be in L mode (receive each post) or in D mode (posts
batched together and delivered at intervals) depending on the traffic
of the list.
This list is a business list for WIGenWeb Project volunteers. I have
always advocated that "this list is where we will discuss all matters
having to do with the WIGenWeb Project. This list is our way to
communicate with each other, and work together. All WIGenWeb Project
volunteers are encouraged to use it for that purpose. It will not only

Dear Fellow CCs,
I've been communicating this past week with Mike Romaine, who has
offered to do lookups in the book "History of Northern Wisconsin" which
was published in 1881 (see book details below). He will be able to
start these lookups as of 17 November. If anyone is interested in his
offer, he would be most happy to hear from you. His email address is
mailto:mromaine@rochester.rr.com . Whether you want to post his lookup
offer on your county pages or just have him send the info to you, is
completely your decision. He just feels that the WIGenWeb project is a
very worthy one and wants to "pay forward" for all the help that he has
received from our county websites. The following are the particulars of
the book, including the counties that are covered in it:
History of Northern Wisconsin: containing an account of its settlement,
growth, development, and resources, an extensive sketch of its counties,
cities, towns and villages, their improvements, industries,
manufactories, biographical sketches, portraits of prominent men and
early settlers, views of , seats, etc.

I was just curious as if it is correct we are to be subbed in D-Mode or
L-Mode one would be getting all messages and then what would the purpose be?
I was not thinking about emails bouncing when I asked.
I may not have worded my question in the correct way - I wasn't thinking so
much of what we might say (posed the question as an open thought) - but more
toward what would be the interest to others in our mallist. I know this has
been stated before but what is the purpose of this maillist? Is it to
provide a venue for county/state coordinators to share information and
assist each other and for the use by the state coordinators to forward
information from the USGenWeb.
Thanks

To quote MAK's letter, she stated that she unsubs, see below. I am
only going by what she said herself.

I can't imagine what we would say that we would need a

MAK,
How come you can unsub from this mailing list? When I requested no
mail when my dad was in serious condition, I had to go to digest mode. Just
wondering how this works, I was under the solid impression that you had to
be subbed to the list, period.

Jan, if you are wondering how she got your email, she
probably has a subscription filter search engine with
rootsweb, as I do.
If she requested all emails with her name, anytime her
filter hits her name, it sends her the email.
I sort for KUEHL so I get all sorts of emails with

I believe (I can check on this), if the list becomes unarchived, than it is
not available for anyone to see, including the subscribers. I will of
course do whatever you all wish regarding this. Paula let me check into
what unarchiving does, and get back to you all.

The list has been archived since for as long as I can remember. No real
purpose I guess, other that it has always been that way. Benefits is a
history of discussions etc., but none other that I can think of.
I thought after I sent my note to Jan, that PML might have been used on
Jan's message. My understanding of PML is it is a facility to notify other
than subscribers of keyword topics that may interest them.

Thanks-not sure it is good reason to have it archived - but I know sometimes
things are set up one way and just never changed or left to continue as it.
Would more people participate on the list if they knew it was amoung the cc
and not for all to read?

Well, then I apologize, that could very well be. I forget that WI is open
to the public. In MI, we are on yahoo groups to avoid leaving a closed CC
list open to the public.
Thank you for your assistance.

I have been curious about this and maybe you can answer a question Tina-why
is this maillist archived? What is the purpose? If it is a maillist for the
WI CC's who else would the informatio benefit. etc.?

I received the same email and was a little puzzled. Is this site a
subscription site? I am curious why they just won't link to the homepage of
a county site and let the researcher see for themselves what is available
free from the actual county site the information is posted on. Any thoughts
etc.??
