Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Quick question. Is there any policy pro/con about family histories sold for
cost to interested persons? I am talking about a personal history, not a
mass market one, written for a county family and their descendants. Can I
make a marketplace page for this purpose, or do I have to link offsite and
ask the person to write her own page? The history in question covers a
couple and their descendants from the early 1860's forward and is approx 250
pages. I expect this question will come up again, so want to have an answer
that holds up well over time.
Thanks, Linda

Hi all,
A reminder of the chat scheduled for tomorrow evening...
To further assist all of you with productively dealing with list
subscribers, and to in general answer any other list administration
questions you may have, I have invited three List administration
guru's to join us for our Wednesday evening chat.
Joan, Valorie and Megan will join us. I look forward to this being an
informative and educational meeting. Hope all who have an interest
will join in armed with questions <g>. I will log the chat, and post
in Question/Answer format a page to
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/volunteer-pages.html in the days
following.
For those of you that can't make it, and wish to pose questions, send
them here to the list, or to me privately, and I will ask on your
behalf.

Hi all,
I am temporarily without e-mail at home. I am writing this from a
remote location connected to my provider.
My neighbor's house was struck by lighening and the surge took our
phone service out of operation (this is back up and running) but
unfortunately, it killed our modem. I can't get E-mail or upload
anything at home. Nor will I be able to attend the Wednesday chat.
Can someone save the chat discussion and send it to me? I am very
interested. I don't know when I will be able to upload anything to any
sites... depends on when we can install a replacement.
Fortunately, my neighbor's family is ok and no one's house was
seriously damaged.

Very good point Rita!
LC stands for Local Coordinator (or CC - County Coordinator - as we call
them) and SC stands for State Coordinator.
We be the LC's and Tina is the SC in our wonderful world of Wisconsin.

Hi all,
Forwarded for your information. Please note that this is not reflective of
my declination of nomination for SC NE/NC Representative. I felt I needed

Hi all,
To further assist all of you with productively dealing with list
subscribers, and to in general answer any other list administration
questions you may have, I have invited three List administration guru's
to join us for our Wednesday evening chat.
Joan, Valorie and Megan will join us. I look forward to this being an
informative and educational meeting. Hope all who have an interest
will join in armed with questions <g>. I will log the chat, and post
in Question/Answer format a page to

Tina
Morning,
I learned A LOT from the feedback as to gateway or ungateway...and I did poll
the Shawano list and they like the gateway ON....I was surprised at how many
people just LOVE reading them, besides me! So I guess I'm glad I didn't
figure out how to ungateway!!
And, yes, I do have back-ups of all the obits I post to the message board in
case the unforeseen happens and the boards are no longer available....that
could be my worst nightmare! There are thousands of obits up there! And I
love the suggestions of how you link them in the sites with cemetery indexes,
etc.
Thanks again,
Anne

Genie-Angels ~ Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, I am the CC for Monroe, Portage, and Wood
Counties, WI. Just wanted to take the time to
point out that all the people at USGenWeb
WIGenWeb are volunteers and provide their
services FREE of charge. (LOUD APPLAUD!!!!!)
On occassion, you may read emails offering
"services" such as SneezyKatinWI(a)webtv.net -
usually this means the services are NOT FREE, but
since it it against the rules to solicit for
personal gain on the mailing lists, their emails
tend to be subversive (another word for
sneaky)... and ask you to contact them for more
information - at which point you are asked for
MONEY!!!
Be advised that people sending these types of
emails are not associated with the FREE services
at USGenWeb WIGenWeb sites of WoodCoWI,
PortageCoWI, nor MonroeCoWI. For FREE services,
continue to post your queries on the Mailing
Lists, or on the Message Boards.
At some point, you may reach a dead end in your
search... You may then desire to obtain the
services of a PROFESSIONAL Genealogist. Just
like you would do for anything else, shop around.
It is OK to ask on the Mailing list or the
Message Boards if there is a person(s)
recommended for the area within you are
researching. Usually, they will respond with a
personal email to you. Ask others what they know
about the person before you respond back. You
may also want to check out:
Association of Professional Genealogists
http://www.apgen.org/
When you contact the PROFESSIONAL Genealogist,
get their REAL name and address and check them
out. A PROFESSIONAL Genealogist will provide you
with their credentials up front. And usually
will have testimonials of others who have used
their services. Ask what are their
qualifications, memberships, how much they will
charge, and what you will receive in the way of
reports. Ask what records they have access to.
WAIT until you get it in writing before sending
any money. BE SUSPICIOUS of anyone who does not
give their real name and address, asks that you
send cash through the regular mail, or does not
seem forthcoming with information on their
services / fees. Ask yourself, would a
professional respond like that???
KEEP track of your researcher, maintain copies of
all email correspondance and other written
correspondance - make notes of phone calls (date
and time, and what was said)... Address your
concerns immediately - before sending mone
money...
Most PROFESSIONAL Genealogists will contact the
CC and or the local Genealogical Society and let
them know of their services. See the listing at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/resource/
Finally, if you feel you have been scammed by a
person claiming to be a PROFESSIONAL Genealogist,
report your concerns to:
1) The Association they are affiliated with
ie APG http://www.apgen.org/
2) The Better Business Bureau http://www.bbb.org/
3) The County Coordinator where they are
researching
4) The State Coordinator where they are
researching
5) Others in the Genealogical Community
State precisely what transpired - give dates,
email addresses, and copies of documents, fees,
etc. which will help further your claim.
Bottom line, there are many great PROFESSIONAL
Genealogists out there. However, it would pay to
exercise caution when hiring one.
If there is a company name and P O Box address
available, it can be checked out through the
Better Business Bureau at:
http://www.bbb.org/
There are links for:
Check Out a Company / File a Complaint
Perhaps this is one way to resolve the situation
permanently. I would recommend that anyone that
sent money in and did not recieve a written
report detailing the manhours to at least check
into it.
I have used the Better Business Bureau prior to
engaging services and it proved to be insightful.
Subject: Civil War/Genealogy Resources at
http://www.wisconsinhistory.org
Dear colleague,
The Wisconsin Historical Society has two new
online research tools to help genealogists
research ancestors who served in Wisconsin units
during the Civil War. Please feel free to pass on
the information below to fellow researchers who
moderate email lists or edit newsletters. Feel
free to run them in your printed or email
newsletter, forward them to your members, or
place a link anywhere on a site you maintain. If
you want to expand or edit these paragraphs, feel
free to visit the web sites below and use any
text there that would be helpful.
If this message isn't appropriate for your
organization, please accept my apologies. I
thought the people with whom you communicate
might like to learn about these two new online
genealogy resources at the Wisconsin Historical
Society's Web site
Best wishes,
Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers, War of the
Rebellion, 1861-1865
These online volumes list all soldiers who
participated in Wisconsin's Civil War regiments.
Known collectively as the Roster of Wisconsin
Volunteers, War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865, two
volumes were compiled in 1886 from archival
records and an alphabetical index was published
in 1914. Together these 3,000 pages give Civil
War service details on about 90,000 Wisconsin
soldiers. Search for soldiers by last name and/or
regiment and company.
Browse this free resource.
Wisconsin Civil War Service Records
Once you've found your soldier in the Roster of
Wisconsin Volunteers, order a photocopy of your
Wisconsin ancestor's Civil War service record.
For most soldiers these records show soldier
name, rank, age and birthplace; hair and eye
color, complexion, height, occupation, and
residence; when, where, and by whom enlisted;
term of service; place where the enlistment was
credited; and date and manner of termination of
service. A special "remarks" sections lists
promotions, special duties, leaves of absence,
engagements, injuries, and, if the soldier died
in service, date and place of death and
sometimes place of burial. Fees apply. Note:
these are not
National Archives pension records.
Lets look at what we have done here:
*Do we have a greater understanding of this particular problem?.......Yes
*Do we have a better understanding of what each of us sometimes faces?....Yup
*Have we been able to exchange information, successful strategies, suggestions,
opinions, positive feedback and experiences?...Definitely
*Was mutual support and understanding shown during this situation?........You
Betcha!
*Have we maintain and/or increased a respect for each other?......Most
Definitely
*Has the bond between members of this group remained and/or
increased?........Absolutely
*Did each person in the group maintain their individuality and self
respect?......100%
*And why?....Rosemarie
Folks, it just doesn't get any better than this!!!
Now it is time to move on. This angry person thrives on attention, the quicker
and bigger, the better. It takes a lot of energy to fuel this kind of anger and
pressing someone's buttons is a surefire way to get the attention needed to
maintain it. We've done a wonderful job here. With what we have discovered and
worked out she will never have the power she once had before this episode. Maybe
we should send her a group "thank you" card. That might really put her bustle in
a bind!
My suggested response for her next posting blitz:
Hi Rosemarie,
It's been a while hasn't it? Well Kiddo, you already know that we can not have
your services ad/help postings on this list, so I am removing it and your
present address is blocked. Have a good day.
Well.......... maybe not. Ellen, I'm kind of partial to Shitaki myself.
