Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I am stumbling out of my cave on this cold sunny day with some
reflections.
There are very few state groups that work as well together as the
Wisconsin folks have learned to. This is my 4th year and much has,
is, and will change. Do was agree on everything? Heck no! We come
from feisty independent Wisconsin Pioneer stock. We have inherited
the proud individuality, sharp eye and keen mind that meant
successful survival to our ancestors, and brought us to new,
uncharted frontiers in the computer and internet worlds. We do
strongly share a passion for the freedom, goals and possibilities
presented to us. AND we have LEARNED and CHOSEN to work together,
accept, encourage and support each other, regardless of differences;
not to compete and compare. I have seen this many time, even when it
meant that a person had to take a few difficult, sometimes painful,
personal steps back in order for things to go forward. That is
kindness, courage, and care, unmatched. We have that well
established in this group. Other county groups do not. They are not
even close to seeing it happen for them. Hopefully they will find a
way to grow together. Let's enjoy what we have accomplished
together, set a good working roll model for what is possible, and
have patients. What we have is not accident. I am beyond words in
trying to say how proud I am of the WIGenWeb people.

Hi,
Does anyone know where there are census maps for the each county? The "Cow
Book" has the locations of the county lines for the census, but I'm looking
for the lines between townships in the censuses....
Thanks,

FWIW, it's cold as a brass swimsuit in January here in
southeast Tennessee where even though we saw 69 a midnight,
it hasn't gotten above 50 the rest of the day with lows in
the upper 30s and lower 40s forecast for the next 3 days.
Sure plays hamhock with one's wardrobe.

Tina, Thanks for the clarification on the voting
registration process...
It occurs to me that as a citizen of the United
States of America, we have the right to vote,
however, we must still register to vote, go to
the polls to vote, and sign for our vote. No one
else can do this for us - it ensures that our
vote is our vote and it is cast or not cast as we
see fit.
Personally, I am glad that they have finally set
up a site for each cc to register. It means that
the CC's do not have to rely on their SC getting
their information right - not everyone has a SC
as great as we do!!!! Keep up the great work.
And it eliminates the problem of some cc's being
missed in the registration process.
On a personal note, I am freezing to death in WI
- there should be a law against being so cold in
May (grin). My father's memorial was really nice
and I met cousins and relatives that I had not
seen since I was kneehigh to a grasshopper (well,
I am still that short - but you know what I mean
= ha ha ha) Both Joan Benner and Shelley Green
stopped by to pay their respects - it was very
thoughtful. Their friendship and support mean a
great deal to me.
Also, When I went through some of my father's old
photos and papers (which I got to keep), new info
on my family surfaced which will help generate
new searches...

Hi all,
I am sure most of you are already aware of this resource, but it is good never
to assume.
This site is great for tracking down the genealogy data that was posted to a
site at one time but was taken down.
You can still find that info as it used to appear by using the "Way Back
Machine"
Put in the URL (usually obtained from your bookmarks) and you can find web
sites that are no longer up and running.

Sounds to me that those SCs that aren't taking roll call, likely won't be
forwarding this email either.
Thus one extra step for those SCs that are doing their job.

What I posted was not in offense against you Tina. I know you are only
doing your job.
I try real hard to figure out the national level, and try to be part of it
by trying to understand the processes.
I will be the first one to admit, I am quite anal about cutting down the
steps necessary to do something. I guess because as a manager of a couple
dozen people, I have realized that often enough people don't do things that
require work or even remotely resemble work.
They get the attitude, I will do it later and later never happens.
Our society is very busy and involved in a lot of things. We don't have time
to do it all. I see this as a case of something that will wait until later.
2 more cents for the bucket.

In other words a backup just in case the SC misses you in a roll call or in
the
list sent to the EC.
So if one doesn't register, it appears they'll still get to vote if the SC
turns
their name/address in within the time required.
Tim
Just for the record, and I usually don't do this on this list, but I to,
agree.
The roll call I conducted has been submitted to the EC. The EC has the most
current addresses that I have for each of you. The issue on the national
level in a nut shell, is that there are supposedly some states that do not
supply, for whatever reason, the lists as requested. I don't want to get
into the issues of why or why not, but let it suffice, that it happens.
With a lot of the information that comes over the SC, Board or other lists,
as State Coordinator, I have the responsibility to pass on to all of you.
That is part of my job. I try very hard to be diligent, and try to use my
best judgment.
The bottom line in the message I forwarded is the registration process is
available as a complement to the lists of eligible voters that the SC's and
other Special Projects provide. I encourage all of you to register, but rest
assured that your names are entered as eligible voters.
You are all terrific! I really appreciate your hard work! Keep adding
things online!

The EC would appreciate it if you would forward this message to any state

Information about things we all need to be aware of:
I know that many (if not most) of you are not the least bit interested in
the "politics" at National Level and pretty much ignore what goes on there.
However, over these past months things have been going on at National that
each of us as Project members need to, at least, be aware of.
There is a new By-Laws Committee that is busy reviewing the existing By-Laws
and will be coming up with a new set to send to the membership for vote.
There is also a grass-roots group that has come up with a new set of By-Laws
(that REALLY have an impact on all SCs/CCs/Special Project volunteers) that
they are trying to get the necessary 5 states to sponsor. If that happens
then that set of By-Laws will also be up for vote by the membership.
A new Guidelines Committee is in operation and they are busy establishing
guidelines for all USGenWeb members and sites. It is assumed at this time
that these Guidelines will also be submitted to the membership for vote.
The Election Committee is being asked by different groups to host some polls
to gather input from the members.
There is a new Newsletter / PR committee that is busy developing a Project
wide newsletter and ways to promote the Project to outsiders.
All of these things have the potential to impact each of us and our web
sites. Over the next few months the Election Committee's web site will have
links and/or information on all of these things.
And just as a reminder - The USGenWeb Project's annual election is almost
here and the Election Committee is busy updating each state's membership
list.
The Election Committee has a registration form on its web site
(http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwelections/) and it will help the EC (not to
mention your SC) if you will take a minute or two to register.
I know that most list owners don't usually post National level information
to the list since so many people don't wish to hear it but I encourage each
of you to find the time to keep an eye on the developments at National since
so much
of what is going on will effect each of us.
And, please go register to vote.
Thanks.

You're absolutely right Ellen!!! Not only that, I feel all the messing with the rules and regulations is an exercise in futility...what wasn't broke didn't need fixed.

I am confused.
Why would we have to register to vote?
As virtue of our position as CCs shouldn't we already be registered?
What was the purpose of Roll Call a week or so back if now we have to take
the time to register?
I don't mean to complain, but it seems to me a bit of a turn off to have to
register for something I should be registered for already with the
acceptance of my position.
I think my effort would better be spent adding things online that farting
around with virtual paperwork.
Just my two sense.

Do not delete any hard drive files based on an e-mail letter, from
anyone, ever. Go to the antivirus program specialist's sites or
other expert before doing anything to your hard drive. This is a
real problem, in this case not terribly damaging but other hoaxes
circulating are; the explanation is below:
There's an E-mail circulating through our E-mail systems and around
the
country advising computer users to delete the JDBGMGR.EXE file
from their
PC hard drive indicating it contains a virus.
THIS IS A VIRUS HOAX
DO NOT DELETE THE FILE.
Even though this file is not a crucial part of your operating system
you
should never delete anything from your PC hard drive until it has
been
verified by a reliable source.
Information Asset Protection offers a site on the Lotus Notes

Please read below for further information regarding this virus hoax.
The JDBGMGR.EXE Virus Hoax
This hoax is modified version of the >the SULFNBK.EXE Virus Hoax.
These
hoaxes fool many
people because of the fact that it looks like you are confirming
the
existence of a virus on your PC
when you find the particular file located on your disk. Both
files
(sulfnbk.exe and jdbgmgr.exe) are
not well known so many people are fooled by this ruse. (jdbgmgr.exe
is a
program used to debug
JAVA applications and most users would notice no harm if they
deleted the
file.)
Judy,
There are alot of great hoax sites out there that should always be checked
before following some of those warnings. Many of them come telling you to
checked your computer for a certain file, most of the time the file is part
of the computer system, yet they tell you to delete it.
There are many more hoax sites out there, if you want a few more, contact
me in private, I would be happy to send them to you.

Awhile back someone on this list asked about Skunk Farms. I came across this
article today in the "1888-1998 Minocqua-Woodruff Centennial Editon"
"Minocqua and Woodruff had their share of industries which may seem unusual
today. Take the skunk farm, for instance. In 1918, F.E. Freeman opened the
Island Fur Farm, Inc., on Rusk (Blue) Lake in Minocqua. He raised skunks,
ginseng and golden sear root there. In September 1918, Freeman received a
shipment of 150 skunks. "The Minocqua Times" observed, "we understand that
the skunks are quite decent for animals of their kind, having had their
shock absorbers removed, and for this reason they are quite welcome."

What's the virus warning about? There are many viruses out there right now.
The most popular that I am getting multiple times a day is that newest one,
the something 32 something in various forms. I don't remember now because
the virus program deletes it for me.
