Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Dear Debie and those interested:
It is unlikely Rootsweb has the virus, since their operating system seems to
operates more like a UNIX server. UNIX servers do not get viruses like
Microsoft systems do. If they were smart, they certainly would have chosen
UNIX over NT. (I can have one of my guys check on which operating system
they are running for sure).
It sounds like the gatewayed message problem has nothing to do with a virus.
It honestly sounds like one of the senior programmers(pun intended) put in
a wrong command and re-released items that had already been gatewayed.
Knowing from experience how those things happen, it is likely it was just an
oops and will settle down soon enough.
The reason some lists were affected and not others, is probably because with
the magnitude of the rootsweb messaging systems. There are likely multiple
servers hosting the lists.
As I have seen it happen, they were probably maintaining one of the servers
that hosted some of the Wisconsin, Minn, and Iowa boards, they tested to be
sure everything was working, and oops.....the problem happened from human
error.
As far as my virus statement, I was commenting on a message someone posted
(sorry for forgetting who you are) regarding attachments.
I know rootsweb allows attachments to their message boards now, but do those
also get gatewayed when the message is sent to the list? If they get
gatewayed, then there is a possiblity an entire server/network was affected
but only only if their network is maintained with a Microsoft product. If
it is a UNIX server, the virus would not be spread through the maillist.
Hope that helps.
Let me know if you have other geeky type questions, I will do my best to
answer, or see if one of my programmers/sys administrators know.
Please note this is a SWAG (scientific wild arse guess), so my information
could be incorrect.

Ellen,
Oh Goodie. I do have more questions, like is there anyway to get
this to stop? I have to assume not, but I have to say I find it hard to
believe that this person who is infected went to all of Wisconsin's and
also to some of Minnesota's and Iowa's sites. All of these were doing the
same thing. Is it possible Ancestry has a virus and doesn't know it and
that is why only some of them are coming through? On my two counties, it
isn't all of the past messages, nor is it all of them from Marathon, only
select dates and then only select messages. It's odd.
Anyway, it seems to have calmed down for now, I hope. Thanks for
explaining,

Ellen,
Thank you very much.. I will also add that if you receive mail with
attachments, even from known, *usual* correspondents, submitters, it is
always a good idea to proceed cautiously. I strongly suggest that you look
at the headers of the suspected bad email, to determine if the email, was
indeed sent by the individual that you received it from. I doubt very much
if a submitter would mind receiving an email asking "Did you really send
this?"
I encourage all of you to have virus protection software, and if you don't I
would recommend, http://housecall.antivirus.com/ as a good alternative.

This virus like many of the viruses predominant lately, have a nasty habit
of going through people's internet cache and sending out mail to all of the
email addresses that are listed on the webpage in the cache file.
Which means, if someone that is infected with a virus recently visited a
newslist archive, a message board or any other webpage that has multiple
email addresses, it is likely the virus will be spread to anyone that is
listed on those webpages.
If you have any other questions please let me know.

Hi,
Does anyone know why there are old messages from Ancestry's boards coming
through the gateway to the mailing lists again? I am having an abundance of
message from both Calumet & Sheboygan's boards from up to 3 months ago. I
have recognized some of them from the first time around, so I don't believe
they were backlogged and finally got through now. These are all repeats of
the same messages from the same date, but they are appearing tonight again.
I hope this makes sense, I have noticed that Marathon County seems to be
having the same problem as my digest came fully loaded with messages from
February 25 through March 22. These are also messages I have received
before from prior digests.
If anyone knows what is happening, could you please e-mail and let me
know, I have a few on my mailing list asking if this is going to keep
happening because they can't deal with the volume of mail coming through
tonight.
Thanks in advance,

Nice job Paula - I love the way you have done your photo album, with the

that!!

boy am I behind. Just had to take a peek at your site though. <g>
