Hi Tina and All-

Variety and substance seem the best words to describe the latest
Oconto County WIGenWeb Site postings at the Newest Additions Page:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wioconto/newest.htm
Gracious contributors and hard working researchers have added so
much for family researchers. If you have not put your surnames into
the site search engine recently (on the Home Page) please consider
doing so. The "Newest Additions" Page lists the brief descriptions
and links to the larger projects, but there are literally hundreds
of other small posting added to existing pages each week. Every one
of these new small postings are found by the site search engine, and
cover countless ancestral families all over the county. By piecing
together these individual data and history postings, a picture of
the lives and personalities comes together, along with a greater
understanding and appreciation within ourselves. We are, each of us,
an important part of something both very old and very ongoing. Even
if your roots are not in this county, there is a strong possibility
(and hope) that today's 3458 pages, large and small, will offer you
something interesting....... and there will be more tomorrow! You
are always welcome. Our Best To You,

TRY TO HAVE A UTTERLY SPECTACULAR DAY!
For anyone who keeps track of my address, I am still
using gebhard(a)niia.net, but for list and Rootsweb
purposes, the alternate address will be
uscholds(a)yahoo.com, the one I am writing from now.
I have had a bad weekend talking to my ISP (6
times)where rootsweb.com was blocked first by
something called wirehub.net and next by Spamcop. I've
been getting such contradictory information that I
decided it would be easier to transfer the RW lists
and associated mail to yahoo. Niia.net doesn't
actually exist anymore - it's a grandfathered domain
from an little ISP in NW Indiana, independent, that
was aquired 3 years ago by Skyenet, which later merged
with grapevine and became myvine/hypervine.
I like the ISP in many ways and don't want to change
(and besides my husband won't let me, it's his account
too LOL).
This has been s-o-o-o-o frustrating.

Hi!
The websites that are protecting their pictures are using a simple java
script to disable the right click on the mouse which allows you to save a
picture.
There are also scripts to prevent someone from seeing your source code or
downloading the pictures to your temp files.
If you go to Google and enter (javascript "No Right Click") without the
paranthesis you will come up with about 1.67 million websites (give or
take a few) where you can download the scripts with easy instructions for
adding it to your webpage.
But a person could always take a screen capture of the image so the only
way to make 100% sure someone else won't use a picture is not to post it.

Debie and all-
Thanks so much for all the input! It gives me more to think about.
This person is asking me to post headstone photos and across the top of the
photo she has Copyright 2002 and then her name. And as we all know this can
just be all cropped off. I just found another county site where she has
submitted photos and they do not have her coypright etc. on them and it just
gives her credit on the page.
After all of the input and some pondering I will not be posting the photos
with a copyright and will offer her to have them posted on a page with
credit given to her as I do with all other items submitted.
Hopefully this won't cause too may waves.
After seeing what you all had to say I guess inforced my own thoughts on it
but guess I just had to hear it from others.
Thanks all!!!!

Jodi,
Usually the copyright from photographers is for making additional
copies, i.e. 5x7 8x10, etc. The copyright is for 70 years, I believe that
hasn't changed. As long as you don't make copies and sell them, I doubt
there is a photographer around who would be po'd about it. After all they
are your family and your family chose them to do the photographing.
I hope this has helped, otherwise perhaps Shari can do a better job,

I guess I feel by alteast posting them - it is sharing - as the researcher
can obtain the information which they may not have at all. If it isn't
posted at all a researcher may not have another way of obtaining the
information. To some it is the information that is important and to others
it may be the photo. Will have to ponder this some.
Not sure what you mean Jodi by after all it is a Gen Web site?

Yes, it's very simple..I won't post what can't be shared. If she wants to
post it, she can set up her own website and hoard to her hearts
content...our sites are for sharing.

That is kind of what she wanted to do put copyright with her name at the top
but that picture can just be cropped then and that part taken off. She wants
to donate headstone photos so would be kind of hard to put something across
them where it couldn't be cropped out and yet see the headstone information
clearly.
Here are a couple of the pages I have photos on.

Shari-
I agree-I have 1035 headstone photos, 248 family photos and 114
postcard/area photos posted and don't care if family researchers copy them
or not. But I have someone who wants to submit some photos and she has had
the experience of having people take them and use them for their own
websites and not give her credit. So I wanted to do this just for the photos
submitted from her.
Would you have any other ideas?

Paula,
I don't know how to do what you are looking for, but I agree with Shari.
The other thing, is that there will always be some way for some one to
figure out how to take what you post, any way, even with a safeguard in
place. So if there is something that you don't want copied, perhaps it would
be best not to post it in the first place...
Or, maybe it would be better to describe the item and ask whoever is
interested in it to inquire, so you can screen who you share it with. That
seems to work well with maintaining privacy for vitals of living people.
