Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Yes, thanks from me too. I am not a techie either, but that does clear a few
concerns up.

Hi Guys:
Below you will find a message I received on another list. You have to have
Excel to use these, but they are WONDERFUL! This person did a great job in
creating them. He asks for a $10.00 donation, it is at your discretion as
to whether you wish to donate or not.
I downloaded them, unzipped and was on my way. They print out onto your
standard 8 1/2 x11 (at least the 1810, 1820 and 1840 that I have used so far
do) and are a great help in copying down those elusive families when you
finally find them. No more trying to remember all the column headings, etc.
when writing down those ones and twos!.

Hi:
If you are interested in your own webspace Rita, I use a company called
aaces.com. They sell 50MGs of space, which is quite a bit for ones own
personal webspace, for as little as $10.00 per month (The Pierce County
WIGenWeb site has over 600 pages on it and still only takes up about 26MGS).
With this you get a subscribable mailing list, Front Page Server Extensions
(for those that need them), Auto Responders and Redirects.
They also register domains for as little as $15.00 per year, less than half
the going rate through Network Solutions.
They have outstanding customer service, never fail to answer within just a
couple of hours of contacting them, will call you if they need too and can
help newbies to understand the different workings of a website. I can't say
enough good about these guys. I park every new website I do on their
servers.
You can also check into your own ISP, many of them offer free webspace, but
it is usually only 2 to 5 MGS of space and, I think, like Rootsweb, you
cannot use your own domain like usgenweb.org, but will be a subweb like
rootsweb.com/~wipierce.

Holly,
OK, now taking it one more step for this old gal, once you have ownership of a
domain, say <www.Fuzphrump.com>, how do the get the site(s) actually posted? Are
there companies that do that? Is Rootsweb one of them? Why did Rootsweb join up
with Ancestry? Rita

It does not, to the best of my knowledge effect any county site.

Hi Kelly,
Just like most other things, a domain name can be sold to anyone for
whatever one can get for it. The $35 fee is just the yearly *license* to
have it and as long as a registrant pays that, they can keep the domain.
Domains do have value over and above their license cost. I believe the
usgenweb.com domain is paid up through next July (I have the information
somewhere just being too lazy to go look for it) but it can be transferred
by the registrant to anyone they choose with or without payment.
For some years, the available domain extensions have been .org, .net and
.com.***
Many enterprises (commercial and organizations) have routinely purchased
all three
but .com is the one most familiar to internet users. Based on our actual
function, the
.org domain is our proper main url.
Anyway, standard practice when you have all three domains is to have one
primary
domain, in our case, .org, with the other two domains "parked" on it which
means all
three urls (usgenweb.org, usgenweb.com and usgenweb.net) all go to the same
cyberspot, not mirror pages but the exact same page.
IF someone else were to own usgenweb.com they could set it up to go to a page
anywhere with whatever they chose on it. Just to choose an example, remember
familydiscovery.com? --- the place that used frames to give the appearance of
ownership of material on usgenweb county sites?
An outfit like that could purchase usgenweb.com and trade on the lack of
knowledge of
many internet users, especially novices, who tend to just stick .com on
words to go places
and pretend to be usgenweb or part of usgenweb.
*** I skipped several domain extensions: .edu and .gov and .mil are pretty
much restricted
to educational institutions such as universities (.edu) and to government
domains (.gov)
and .mil is the military domains. There are a bunch of new extensions
coming out but none
of these have the familiarity that .com does.
Anyway, I hope this has helped clarify how the domains work.

This is the only way I know how to get this message to the entire
board.
Since Doc is no longer interested in retaining the usgenweb.com domain
he is going to sell it. We had the domain appraised and it is worth
$3,073 to $3,755. We don't want the domain to go out on the auction
block for some porn company to pick it up, so we are offering it to
the Project for $2,500 (negotiable).
If you would like to see the appraisal you can go to:
http://www.greatdomains.com/Services/Wav/WavReport.asp?sVal=069996E9F9579...
B6CA269A
Bridgett and Doc Schneider
This can be "sold" for the $35 registration fee. Is Doc selling it and
wanting to get the appraisal value? I'm not sure why he doesn't just renew
it, then transfer it over to someone.

CHICAGOOld photographs, yellowed letters, thumb-worn Bibles, reels of old
movies, and delicate lace christening dressesfamily treasures or forgotten
trash? Sentimental tokens such as these, collected throughout the years, are
often stashed away in attics or buried deep in basements, waiting to be
rediscovered by succeeding generations. But care must be taken to preserve such
family heirlooms, or all that may be left for posterity is crumbling pages and
moth-eaten material.
On 10 October, at 6 p.m., the Newberry Library's Friends of Genealogy (FOG)

principles for preserving a myriad assortment of family treasures.
Dan Cochrane, a professional conservator, will talk about preserving

Stephanie Orphan, Archives Director at the Museum of Broadcast Communications,
will address audio/visual materials.
Susan Russick, Director of Conservation at the Newberry Library, will discuss

Hi -
I also got this spam and I am the admin of the Waupaca County message board
and I did go in and delete it. We can delete messages ourselves. I just
happen to be on the computer when this came through and I deleted it
immediately.
Debie-I deleted the message by logging in - clicking on Go To Admin Center -
go into the message your want to delete and it will give you choices of what
you want to do and you can delete it from there.

NEW: In our continued attempts to facilitate the
researcher, we have begun providing links on each
census transcription that informs the public of the
URL for the USGenWeb County Page where they can
find more information on the county. We will also
be notifying the county coordinator so that they
know the census is available online.
