Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Would the CC or CCs that handle these areas of Wisconsin please contact me?
I've got a visitor looking for relatives in these two locations.

Hi all,
Time to make sure that I have you all listed correctly on the WIGenWeb
Project County Coordinator page
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/counties.html
In your response, please list the email address that you would like to
have reflected there, as well as the email address you prefer to be
subbed to the WIGEN mailing list with. If you have alternate emails
that you would like to use on the WIGEN list include those as well,
and I can assure that they are on the accept list.
And as always, county page updates are appreciated. I have, for the
past few months been including those links on the WIGenWeb Project
home page under the "What's New" section.
Also, please take a moment to review
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/volunteer.html and update your pages
if necessary.
Thanks, and to all, keep up the GREAT work!

Hi all,
I've started uploading township maps to the Outagamie site that show
cemetery locations. I only have 5 townships (Bovina, Deer Creek, Liberty,
Maine and Maple Creek) online so far but hope to add at least 1/week until
they're done. The maps are scanned from a county map put out by the
Outagamie County Planning Dept. The files sizes are larger than I'd like
but I wanted to show as much detail as possible so they could be used as a
reliable reference. You can find links to the maps at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wioutaga/cemlist.htm.

Hi all,
Thanks to everyone who responded to my request (plea) for help with
Outagamie county cemeteries. I had quite a few responses, all of which
were extremely helpful.
Jenny
Hi All,
Just a word of knowledge regarding the cemetery book...it does contain a lot of "unknowns" in it. The authors (whom I do know and spent some time with today) did the best they could. But they were running into a lot of the difficulties that have been discussed in these postings already. And when you're looking at the magnitude of the entire state - it's quite an unsurmountable task.
In Iowa County - there were several unknowns listed. But, with the help of our Genealogical Society members, we were able to identify all of them listed in the book. So far, the number that they had listed in the book is right on with number that we eventually identified. And someone else had found a map that pinpointed where the cemeteries were and that matched the overall number listed in the book also.
All in all, it's a great resource. Just don't buy it thinking it's going to answer all of your naming and location questions. Chances are - it won't.
Thanks,
Peggy Perry

Hello All!
There is an EXCELLENT book that would help you and anyone else with this
task of identifying cemetery names and locations in Wisconsin counties,
published recently by Origins in Janesville WI...the same company that
sells the often referenced and *moovelous* COW book <G> The cemetery book
is called CEMETERY LOCATIONS IN WISCONSIN
Cemeteries are indexed both by name of the cemetery and also sorted by
county and then by townships within each county. The location of the
cemetery is given by township section number and road/hwy location, so they
are easy to find on a plat map or county road map. For example, in the
Outagamie Co section for Bovina township it lists:
Section 33, St Dennis Catholic, on Rexford Road
Section 33, Bovina, on Rexford Road, next to St Dennis cemetery
There are also township outline maps showing the arrangement of townships
within each county, meaning of gravestone symbols, cemetery terms (such as
columnbarium--a place where cremains are stored in recessed spaces) and
tips for dating tombstones in WI by the material they were made from--over
200 pages of very useful and easy to use information.
If you would like to buy this reference book, it costs $20 + $3 shipping
(WI residents add 5% sales tax) and send check, m. order or credit card
info to ORIGINS--4327 Milton Ave--Janesville WI 53546 or call at 608 757
2777 The 'cow book' is titled Wisconsin: It's Counties, Townships and
Villages and it costs $18 plus another $1 shipping if ordered at the same
time as the Wisconsin Cemeteries book. You may be able to obtain these
books through your local library's inter-library-loan service, also, if you
would like to look before deciding if you will buy it.
Good luck :D

You have started in a good place with geonames. Whether you live in the county
or not, cemeteries are a difficult topic to research. I have found that telling
them I am making a list of cemeteries for state genealogical research up front
got me what I wanted in a good way. It took time and lots of work to get a
decent list together, and I am still working on it as new info comes up. Here
are other places I used in preparing my county site list:
Write to local funeral homes, because this is their business to know,
especially the long established ones, (and send a self-addressed envelope)
requesting:
1. Ask for the listing of cemeteries in the area, both open and closed to
burials.
2. Ask for the contact name/address of the person(s) who has the records, such
as sexton.
3. Ask them if they keep, or have kept, copies of obituaries in their files.
Large cemeteries like Riverside in Oshkosh have many on file and it is a
treasure if you know to ask about them.
Write or call the township offices - clerk. They know every cemetery in their
territory, city and rural, old and presently used, and who is in charge. They
are often stuck with the care and maintainance of the oldest ones. And they
will often have records on who is there.
State Historical and Gen Societies will often have listings of cemeteries,
their locations, and lists of gravestone transcriptions. On the Transcription
lists : a note of caution. These are usually copyrighted and the property of
the organization. They help to support themselves and their on-going work by
selling these lists for a small amount. It would be unethical to print these
lists on the site without their permission. I print only lists done by
individuals who have done the "cemetery walk" on their own, independantly. No
one owns the information on the stones, but they do own the work that went into
gathering that information, and I respect that. Fair is fair.
Hope this helps, Rita - Oconto County

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone knowledgeable with Outagamie county can help me
out. I'm trying to put together a list of cemeteries and where they're
located for the Outagamie WIGenWeb site. I'd also like to include them on
an online county map. I'm using two different sources for the
cemeteries. One is the USGS site at
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form. The other
is a list of cemeteries I found at the Appleton Public library. The USGS
site is nice because it shows exactly where each cemetery is
located. However the list from the library is more extensive and although
I think it's referring to some of the same cemeteries, the names are
different. I need some help trying figure out which of the cemeteries on
the USGS list correspond to the list I got from the library. Can anyone
out there help me? I'd really like to improve the cemetery info on the
Outagamie site but I don't even live in Wisconsin so it's hard to get some
of this information myself. I've put both lists online at
http://www.bethurem.com/geeksrus/cemetery.htm. I'd appreciate any help you
can provide.

Wasn't trying to be critical here - but knowing the MI DNR.......... Well,
what can I say - they find it hard to find numbers for you within their own
departments. LOL
Waushara is doing great. Joan Benner has been sending lots of goodies, and
I am still backed up from vacation - but catching myself - I think. <g>
Another week or so. Dar has been a real help too...
Waukesha is really popping and looking nice with Ellen's help. And Ashland
and Bayfield are waiting for the loads of stuff I have to get online.

There are some indications that reselling and profit are not the motivation
but that control and/or taking over might be.
I have to agree with Ellen and Debie on this subject.
As to what involvement the National should have in the states - NONE, other
than to set up a mediation group to handle concerns between the SC and the
CC's. Something other than the current grievance procedure. I think we
could do fine with less National involvement - maybe a webmaster to keep up
a National page and let the states set up their own boards and mediation
groups.
Other than that they should allow the CC's to run the state as they deem
necessary - as long as it complies with the laws of the land.
Just my two cents worth.

Those states that don't have any information and aren't working on the
sites, should have them taken over IMHO. Of course, only by someone who
plans to put information online to the best of their ability.
I think any site that is active and properly registered with the Search
Engines, will not lose their ranking regardless of what domain they do or
don't have.
I have to commend all of us here in Wisconsin because of the great job we do
on the sites(or at least all the I have visited). I have relatives from
Minnesota and North Dakota and when I go to some of those county sites, I
find nothing other then an email address of someone that never answer my
requests or I find dead links.
It really stinks when I work so hard to get information on my co-sites only
to go to another site and find not even an attempt to put information
online. I know we are all volunteers and all of us don't have the same time
as others, but if you aren't going to put something up even every month or
two, what's the point?

I love it!!!!!!!
Thanks for the giggle!!!!!
but, seriously... WIGenWeb is lucky Tina acted when she did. One individual
seems to have finished up yesterday buying all the unregistered
xxgenweb.com's and .org's so if she had been any slower, wigenweb's domain
names would be in someone else's hands today.
In the next day or so I will be asking this nationally but I'd like some
opinions here on this list where I feel I can speak a little more
informally. For those who hadn't heard, starting back in July one person
started buying up the untaken xxgenweb.com and .org domains. It appears
that she will only turn one over to a state genweb if they formally
incorporate or at least that is what her reply to a GAGenWeb's CC who
inquired. I can not say for sure as she has so far not replied to my
messages inquiring of her plans or requirements.
WIGenWeb is a pretty levelheaded bunch and I would like to hear what you
all think of this and what you think national or state level should do
about it, if anything.
