Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Now that I am totally confused (doesn't take much some times) on the use of
the link/logo on our web pages. Since I am presently working on changing
each of my pages I would really like this clarified-am I suppose to have a
state/us logo and link on each of my web pages or is having the logo and
link on the homepage and just links on the other pages enough?

I addressed it to TINA & TIM and since she needs to speak thru you or get

I find your "threat" of SC removal more than a little annoying, and the
entire point of the email was to get a roll call, and get some of those
people who have serious project logo problems to do some updating. There are
several county sites with the SC's name from 2 SCs ago. There was never any
discussion regarding links on *every* page of a county website and I thought
I had cleared that up. It was a sentence that could have been taken several
ways... so why is it necessary to come up with the most bizarre and
irrational possiblity? (such as the spectre of adding logos & links to all
4,926 of your pages) Tina is not trying to trick anyone with hidden words
and meanings in her email, or make anyone do anything that wasn't already
implemented (however ignored it may have been.) The list is discussing the
use/non use of the WIGenWeb logo in a polite and professional manner, and
I'm sure that will be cleared up. You of all people know that Tina is
completely approachable on issues and problems you may have without
resorting to these tactics.

Hi all,
I've gotten several strange bounce messages from my WIDANE-L & D lists
the last few days. I've also had people who wonder how they got
subscribed and one postee which complained of spam from my list. Have
any of the rest of you experienced any of these problems? I personally
haven't seen any spam come across my list--rootsweb has always done an
excellent blocking job.

Maybe we should have a vote (I think it would be the correct way to handle
this) on accepting and making the "New Rules" a set of bylaws for the
WIGENWEB Project.
Anyways that is how all organizations I have and currently belong to did to
make the bylaws they now have in place.
JT
To all,
Part of this roll call, as I stated, was to acquire correct email addresses
for all County and CO-County Coordinators for the purposes of the State
County page and for purposes of future elections of the USGenWeb Project. I
gave a deadline, so that I can have a point of reference when I write to the
non-respondents regarding their pages, and subscription to the list. I felt
that the time given was reasonable.
I also, (with the exception of the WIGenWeb Project logo), have not included
anything that has not been stated on the Info for Volunteers - County Page
Guidelines/Standards http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/countypage.html and
the USGenWeb Project Bylaws http://www.usgenweb.org/official/bylaws.html
I have also said that I was unsure about the discussion of the inclusion of
the WIGenWeb Project logo. The discussion on the list, thus far, has been
good on this issue. We can after this roll call vote of this. I also may
have erred in using the phrase "Every page," and have said that I will phrase
it better. I do feel that identification of affiliation with the USGenWeb
Project and the WIGenWeb Project are important on our pages.
All of the USGenWeb Project logos on all of the state pages should link to
the USGenWeb Project pages. I will correct the link on the volunteer page.
We need to work together with respect and courtesy. If you have questions or
concerns about the way things are being handled, I would like to hear about
it. If I am not aware, I cannot work with you towards a solution.
Have a very happy and safe New Year!
Tina
Question for Tina & Tim,
I do know for a fact that it has "always" been a USGenWeb Rule to be
subscribed to the state list.
The question I have is this
Since several still seem to be unsubbed to it, (since they show as "by way
of Tim Stowell"), and have been unsubbed since before I was Election Chair
Person and helped out during the elections, with what seems as no recourse
of action, what will be the course of action after Jan 15, 2000 for any and
all that fail to abide by the "New" rules set forth, (without being voted on
may I add) ??
To me this is a pressing issue, since as I have stated to several, I work
anywhere from next door to my home to as far as 1800 miles away when I do
get home, my family and my Emergency Management volunteer efforts are
priority ober the USGW WIGENWEB site that I co-CC on, these new rules can
and will be very time consuming for all CCs if abided by to the letter. I
have read them already 5 times and still can not see why anyone would wish
for a CC to do what the 2nd rule states,
Every page must have a pointer to the Wisconsin State Page. It is encouraged
that a link, also be included to the Wisconsin County Selection List
maintained by the Assistant State Coordinator. It would also be helpful to
individuals interested in hosting WI County pages, if a note be included
instructing individuals to contact the state coordinator and give his/her
email address, and county of interest. The current Wisconsin State
Coordinator is Tina Vickery. The Assistant State Coordinator is Tim Stowell.
and also as I have already pointed out, on our Rock County site we have the
USGenWeb & WIGenWeb logos and even tho they themselves are linked, we also
have links to these further down on the main page. I noticed that on the
site
"http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/volunteer.html" that there is no link to
the USGenWeb site even tho there is a logo there. (I last checked it and
printed it out on 12-30-1999 at 3:48 pm CST.
If I had know prior to the election that unlike the answers I was told about
changes and such to the way things are done without proper voting and all, I
would never have voted for anyone nor participated in the election.
To me this is a "cold slap in the face" since there has not been a vote as
to make these rules.
JT
PS An SC can be removed by 2/3 vote of all CCs in that state.
My thoughts are not neccessarily the thoughts of my co-CC and only reflect
my personal feelings on these matters.
JY

Chat: I'd be glad to participate those Wed.'s I have free. I think it's
nice to have a set time & place where people can gather. But, short of
there being some overriding issue that *needs* discussion, I think we
need to accept the fact that there are people who will show up, others
who can't, and others who won't. For the record, Tuesdays are *not* a
good day for me.
News: None. ;-P
My .02 on the logo discussion:
I've been a CC since Feb. 1997. From the start, it was always required
to have the USGenWeb logo, and strongly recommended to have the
individual state logo, on the starting page for each county.
My opinion is that it makes sense to ID the affiliation of the pages,
i.e. USGenWeb logo & WIGenWeb logo on the first page. This indicates to
visitors that the pages are part of a specific, all-volunteer, project.
Putting the logos, or links back to USGenWeb & WIGenWeb, on every page
in a county seems excessive & unnecessary, to me.
Happy Holidays & Happy New Year!

Debbie,
Here is how I transfer mine:
*First I bring up the page (not the HTML, but the one that is visible
on the site to visitors).
*Then I use the curser to highlight the text that I want to use.
*Then I press Ctrl+C keys to copy the hightlighted material to the
clipboard.
*Next open your e-mail or word processor page (Microsoft for you),
and place the curser where you want the text to be on the page. (I
jjust put it right on an open e-mail letter to send right to the
archives which saves a step, but both works).
*Press the Ctrl+V keys and the text will be on the page without the
HTML coding.
Hope this helps, Rita - Oconto County
It goes fast after you have done it a couple of times.

Hi Debbie,
I might be all wet here, but can't you just highlight the page that you want to
transfer, copy it, then paste it into your Notepad or Wordpad (depending on how
big the page is)? You will have to do some rearranging of the text to make it
look the way you want it, but it works for me when I try it, so I think maybe it
will work for you too. Hope so anyway! Once you get it looking the way you want
it, along with adding the USGenWeb Notice, you just ftp it to the archives!
Happy New Year!

Dear Debie:
Thanks for the tip on this nifty little program. I downloaded it and have
already converted four documents in the short amount of time since you
answered me. And it was free!!! Of course the woman who runs the Pierce

this is your one and only warning). She probably won't think it's so cool.

Hi, I've been a cc for a bit longer than MAK - I started before Ben took
over. The logos were a requirement when I came on. I think Ben was just a
bit lax with folks at the time, probably because he was new himself and
didn't want to come across as the big bully (a young college student at the
time!).
Unfortunately, Ben went "home" for summer break and never came back to being
the SC and after several non-answered messages and quite a lag time, someone
else took over.
Thanks!

Hi:
Does anyone out there know of a good program to convert HTML to TXT. I would
like to start placing material from my Pierce County site (which would rate a

Hi! Its MAK reporting in from sunny southern California (there are a few of us
CC's out here). I have Wood and Portage counties.
Some background from those of you newer to USGenWeb WIGenWeb than others. I
joined as a CC back when Tim someone from MN was the state CC back in early
1997. At that time, there were only a handful of us, and we all agreed to the
green circle logo as THE WI logo and the rules were, you took the county and
ran with it... interpret that as NO requirements, NO minimal expectations,
etc. As a group of eager volunteers with little HTML experience, whatever we
could get up was definitely better than nothing... Many discussions have come
and gone since, and some alternative suggestions were made, but NO VOTE since
the green logo. So, technically, that IS the offical logo. Prior to that we
had a state of WI with a cow and cheese (YIKES! It was green too, come to think
of it.) I might have it in my archives for your viewing pleasure!
I would like to suggest that we do what we did last time. People were asked to
create some graphics and submitted them to the SC, who put them on a page, then
we voted for ONE LOGO, so we at least had that in common. Many states have
same background graphics everything, so having just the USGenWeb and the State
Logo on the MAIN or index page is very reasonable. Also, what do you think
about a graphics section in the WI directory that we can all link to, rather
than each of us have the "offical" graphics in each of our county graphics
directory. Takes up a lot of unnecessary server space.
What is new, well, let's see (grin)... in the last year, both counties have
been connected to the USGenConnect Boards, both counties have active mailing
lists. Both counties have history pages, separate links pages, and have a
search engine on their respective archives pages. All pages have a Revision
date on them so people looking for recent updates know when it was last changed
and have KEYWORD coding, so they will show up in the majority of search
engines, such as YAHOO, etc. Since my adoption in 1998, almost all PortageCoWI
Cemeteries are surname indexed and each has it's own page now. WoodCoWI is
slowly coming along SLOWLY, but managed to get all the known cemeteries listed,
with a brief description of location, and three have surname indexes. I have
started accumulating the makings of a good research library, with major
purchases in the last year, and adding them to the references pages of each
county.
BTW, I am not tooting my horn at all, but have the most wonderful volunteers
and contributors who have been typing away, and sending me stuff to post (my
part is easy, a little edit, a little fluff, 30 minutes or so, FTP and it is
done and another page is up.... Obits are in the hundreds for PortageCo, and
WoodCo is starting to follow suit. Oh, I almost forgot, there is a surname
index for two of the WoodCoWI newspapers which is on-line and available in the
archives for the 1991 and forward.
ho ho ho. Did I meet the 15 Jan 2000 deadline, yet? Oh, yeah, comments on the
requirements. Have all the logos, and the SC and ASC on pages (although not
sure WHY that should be a requirement - sorry, you two have all have WI state
pages to be on and it is redundant to have it on all the county pages,
butttttttttt if you want it there, who am I to argue? And besides it is there
already - grin) We started that in 1997 when almost every county needed to be
adopted (never voted on, it was sorta agreed to as we basically copied the html
coding from each other as we joined)... might be time to reconsider that
requirement, since most of the counties are now well established and the people
coming to the sites either are regulars or newbies searching for DATA for that
particular county. The SC could have links from the map and county that goes
to a page that says, ADOPT ME... makes more sense you'd adopt a county you
want research from and would click on that county and find the info about
adoption.
As for logo graphics on each page, YIKES. All my pages for each county have an
identity. That is if it is a WIGenWeb Page, it has the same look as my main
page for that county, so when the user clicks to links, they look alike and
know they haven't "left" the site. Putting a bunch of graphics on each page
isn't necessary when you have a set look to the pages in your site, in fact,
due numerous complaints of slow load time, removing more and more. Eventually,
will only have graphics on the MAIN pages, and links at the bottom to major
USGevWeb WIGenWeb sites.
We also need to consider that not all county information is in the WIGenWeb
project, since many counties have volunteers and contributors at web sites
outside WIGenWeb. Some contributors do NOT want it included permanently in the
WIGenWeb site (because of the USGenWeb guidelines), as they want to permanently
OWN the information or the pages, so it is linked without making it a part of
the "official" site... Some pages should look different to make sure people
know they belong together, such as all the HOWGS pages... and what about pages
with links to commercial resources, which cannot be in the WIGenWeb project.
OK, that is my say for the century and I promise not to post again til the next
century... And then probably at the next roll call (unless you ask for a
vote)... People really don't appreciate my GREAT sense of humor and take
everything personally and wait until the list really gets some good
communication going, then verbally wack me upside the head...
R/S MAK (aka phonetically Mar sea ah KEEL)
ps I will be shutting down tomorrow sometime and not coming back on line until
4 or 5 Jan 2000 which is what all the Y2K experts recommend, and goodness knows
if the computer will blow up or not. So that 15 Jan 2000 deadline is coming
faster than we think... (Hmmmmmm, wonder what happens to those poor CCs not
compying by 15 Jan, do they go on a list to be executed... ) OK OK, I am
instigating again, but think about it. What really will happen if people don't
comply? Isn't that something that should be discussed and made clear up front?
Just my thoughts.

Shari,
My thoughts exactly, if it comes to putting all theses links on every page
of a county site then it is going to become "One Big Ad" for WIGENWEB not a
local county page, (personal thoughts only and do not neccessarily project
the thoughts of my Co-CC)

I don't know about anyone else, but I have over 200 pages of data on my
county site, actually closer to 400. I will put a logo on the main page, but
I refuse to put any links on any but my main page. I feel this is
sufficient. Also, I don't even remember any vote or anything that REQUIRES
us to put anything but the USGenWeb logo on our main page.

As for news on my site, I have just put over 500 marriages online, part of
the 1870 census and a family history that was submitted, as well as new
information that was submitted for 2 of the cemeteries.
