Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

information such as her birth date, place, etc. and what general information
you have about her mother and mother's family on-leaving out any names. This
way maybe if the mother is looking she will recoginize the information and
contact?

People this is getting WAY out of hand! So some choose to put information up
for free and other decide their hard work is worth a little money! That is
for
each person to decide on their own. If you don't want to pay for it that's
fine but don't berate somebody on a public list like this! I am tired of
opening my email to find nothing but bickering! I along with everybody else
have to weed through this junk (and I am including my own email in that
statement) to find the important emails that need addressing. Please won't
everybody just stop!

would be less copies expense.

essential to most "good" and "thorough" genealogist, certified or

Please feel free to post the e-mails I sent to you regarding this matter
or any other.
I can't remember ever hearing of you before today.
Below are the total e-mails sent in response to my letter immediately
below. I sent NO nasty e-mail to Debie & resent her saying I did.
Furthermore, I feel she owes me an apology for saying such a thing!

[One thousand and one sincerest apologies for using this list to notify
people of cemeteries we have finished visually indexing and have
available to our 'fellow genealogists'.
Why is there a charge for our copies of cemetery records? Simple. DO you
realize how MANY HOURS it takes someone to walk some of these cemeteries
and visually read the stones of those buried there?
Walking these cemeteries with mosquitoes eating you alive or with your
hands so cold they get numb while you write. I'm sorry, but the lady who
does the Barron Co., Wi. cemeteries does this out of the goodness of her
heart & in her spare time, of which she has very little with a full time
job, 3 kids, & church work besides. Why does she do it? So people out of
this county can have access, through our GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, to their
family grave site information.
Why the charge? Paper to write all this info on, pens to write on the
paper, gas for her car to & from these cemeteries, cost of paper we
print them out on, cost of the printer by which they are printed, cost
of the computer on which we type all the info, cost of the disc on which
we save the info, cost of time to type all the info into the
computer.........etc........
Sheesh! Thusly there is a minimal charge for copies of all the
gravestone info from a certain cemetery! How much would it cost someone
to drive all the way here or HIRE a genealogist to go out and retrieve
the info? The money received from the sale of a copy of a cemetery goes
to the BARRON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY,
which, by the way, is a NON-PROFIT organization. I'm a genealogist.
Certified at that, a
& I have paid, HAPPILY I might add, for
information from other states.
When I think how much it would cost to
fly or drive to New York state, how much time and effort it would take
to track down my ancestors & how much motel stays, etc. would cost, I am
GRATEFUL to pay a few dollars for the info I need. Sorry to spout off,
but I think we have better things to do than belly-ache about
information put on here, for sale or not, that might be of interest to
other ancestor seekers. Rosemarie Novak

{Brenda,
I guess my question here
was, why are we using the state CC list for this? Barron county has it's
own mailing list. I would think if you had relatives from that county
you would be signed onto that mailing list and then would be made aware
of book or other things being for sale.
When I signed onto
USGenweb, I was under the impression that it was a place for FREE
genealogical information to be placed on-line for others to access.
Rosie,
My next question is to
you. Does Rootsweb know you are selling information on-line? The policy
of Rootsweb unless it has changed is that any Genealogical Society that
uses Rootsweb space to sell their information must also share the
proceeds with them. Were you aware of this?
Just wondering,

{I play the violin for you. Listen, I am a mom of 6 kids, ranging in age
from 18 months to 15 years, I have indeed walked the cemeteries mostly
in the next county, which requires a 45 minute trip each way. I am aware
of the cold in fall, and winter, the squish in spring and even the bugs
in summer. I am even further aware of the rodents running across your
feet. I DO NOT charge for my paper, pens, gas, time or anything else.
Why not? Because when I took on these counties I did so knowing it would
be for FREE genealogical information going on-line. You want to make a
profit, no problem, but why take a county in a setup that is pushing for
FREE genealogy then? Have you ever thought of the person who can't
afford to pay for research and it is the only sort of enjoyment she has
left? Doesn't she count because she can't pay you?
You have the Baron
county mailing list, I don't see why you have to use the state CC list
to publish all of this stuff, if the people are interested in Barron
county, wouldn't they subscribe to the mailing list?}

this mailing list? It makes no real difference to me, but are we suppose

I have information on
the person below because they did stop in Sheboygan and that is my
county, but in the past I have had a copy of people write and say they
found a birth in my county and the sale of land and then the family is
believed to have settled in a second or even third part of the state
before their final resting point and they wanted to know if there was a
way I could post a query for them other than the unknown state query
board. I wasn't aware we could post this stuff here.
Tina or Tim, would you
please help to clarify this for us CC's so we know what to expect from
this list in the future?

Is this what County Coordinators
stoop to when another CC puts
something on this list by mistake??????????
I'm not sure this is a list I care
to be on when adults act this way.
My name is Rosemarie. I would NEVER assume I could address someone
as Rosie when their name is clearly
not that. If someone is named Catherine do we assume we can call her
Cathy?

Hi All,
The issue of research materials and/or services which may be for sale/hire,
either by the coordinator,
a genealogy society, or others, is addressed in the USGenWeb Project by-laws.
(posted below).
We all appreciate the tremendous value of new publications, and many of our
visitors welcome the
notification of their availability. Please use the bylaw posted below, as a
guideline in posting this material on
your websites.
Please do not hesitate to notify this list of your county's URL for material
of this nature.

Joan,
I think the flap is about people posting *that* info to *this* list.
This list is not for genie info, it's for stuff about being a CC in WI.
Personally, I have *no* idea why Barron Co.-specific genealogical
information is appearing on this list.
Please understand me -- It's valuable information. It needs to be
disseminated. I have no problem with that. I'm all for free info.
But, this list is not the Wisconsin Genealogy list -- it's the WIGenWeb
County Coordinator's list. This list is specific for a particular
purpose, ie: County Coordinators and how to administer our WI counties.
That info needs to be on the Barron Co. list, or WI-MI, or someplace
meant for trading & posting genealogical information.
I'm not mad at anybody, I just wish that person would quit putting
county-specific info on an admin list.
On the other hand, there's always the Delete key, eh?
Happy Hunting!

One thousand and one sincerest apologies for using this list to notify
people of cemeteries we have finished visually indexing and have
available to our 'fellow genealogists'.
Why is there a charge for our copies of cemetery records?
Simple. DO you realize how MANY HOURS it takes someone to walk
some of these cemeteries and visually read the stones of those buried
there?
Walking these cemeteries with mosquitoes eating you alive or with your
hands so cold they get numb while you write.
I'm sorry, but the lady who does the Barron Co., Wi. cemeteries does
this out of the goodness of her heart & in her spare time, of which she
has very little with a full time job, 3 kids, & church work besides.
Why does she do it? So people out of this county can have access,
through our GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, to their family grave site
information.
How much would it cost someone to drive all the way here or HIRE a
genealogist to go out and retrieve the info?
The money received from the sale of a copy of a cemetery goes to the
BARRON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY,
which, by the way, is a NON-PROFIT organization.
Sorry to spout off, but I think we have better things to do than
belly-ache about
information put on here, for sale or not,
that might be of interest to other ancestor seekers.

Hi, I for one, would be happy to know if they/whoever had published something
in the area of my research... are we hurting anyone by letting them know? It
does not diminish the list.. As long as it is WI and genealogy i think we owe
it to folks to let them know there is old/new and upcoming data available.
Color me weird~ but i sure would be happy to get the cemetery of my
grandfather in publication......... but i live 4 states away and am not
seeing the uptodate publications done.. so where better
than the mailing list???
thanks.. my 2cents

Hi all,
I don't mean to start a row again or anything, I guess I just want to
clarify the purpose for this mailing list? It makes no real difference to
me, but are we suppose to be using this mailing list for the state WIGenweb
CC's for queries, sales of books, etc.?
I have information on the person below because they did stop in Sheboygan
and that is my county, but in the past I have had a copy of people write
and say they found a birth in my county and the sale of land and then the
family is believed to have settled in a second or even third part of the
state before their final resting point and they wanted to know if there was
a way I could post a query for them other than the unknown state query
board. I wasn't aware we could post this stuff here.
Tina or Tim, would you please help to clarify this for us CC's so we know
what to expect from this list in the future?
Thanks, Debie

Obviously this is a society that hasn't heard that sharing actually makes
the pie grow.

As can I. Perhaps an indexed or sample version of what folks would get in
purchasing the cemetery indexes would be more helpful to all concerned.
In North Dakota, my ASC asked a local society if he could add the index of
the county cemetery book to his website - they agreed and since then sales
of the actual book have zoomed. In fact they went so well they've offered
him the indexes of all their other cemetery books covering the eastern 1/3
of the state.
That's when it got really interesting. This society talked with their
fellow societies across the state and now they are all banging on our door
asking for the same treatment!

I had to chuckle at this one Tracy. Cute!
