Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

--State Coordinators in the NE/NC region, please forward to your State lists--
Dear Fellow Volunteers,
On Oct 10, the Advisory Board requested letters of interest from any County
Coordinators (CC's) in the Northeast/North-central (NE/NC) region who were
interested in filling the vacant NE/NC County Coordinator Representative
Position on the Advisory Board. Two CC's are interested in filling this
position. In alphabetical order, they are Richard M. Howland and David C.
Young. Richard M. Howland is CC of Piatt Co., IL, and David C. Young is CC
of
Belknap Co, NH, Carroll Co., NH, Androscoggin Co., ME and TC (Town
Coordinator)
of Rockport and Gloucester, Essex Co., MA
It is the opinion of the Advisory Board that both of these applicants are
well
qualified and that either of them would ably represent the NE/NC CC's on the
Advisory Board.
The Advisory Board wishes to encourage all CC's in the NE/NC region to take
an
active role in letting the board members know who you wish to represent you.
Since the Advisory Board is interested in filling this vacancy in the very
near
future, please send any comments on this matter prior to October 29, 1999.
CC's of the NE/NC region who wish to comment publicly should do so on
USGenWeb-
NE-L, while those volunteers who wish to comment privately should send their
comments directly to individual board members. Information about
USGenWeb-NE-L
can be found after my signature, while the names and addresses of individual
Advisory Board members can be found at:

The states in the NE/NC Region are Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maine,
Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode
Island, Vermont, Wisconsin.
Sincerely,
Ed Book
Advisory Board Secretary
The USGenWeb-NE-L is intended for the State and County Coordinators for the

list is to facilitate a means of communication between the NE/NC
Representatives to the USGenWeb Advisory Board and the State/County
Coordinators of the region.
To send comments to USGenWeb-NE-L, use the address USGenWeb-NE-

The server that houses GenConnect will be down today (Tuesday, Oct 26,
1999) until about 9 pm PST (midnight east coast). It's being moved to a
new location.
Once it's back up, it may have a new DNS, so if it appears to still be down
for you, please allow some time for the DNS to filter its way through the
'Net.
If you or your visitors have trouble bringing GenConnect up after tonight,
try the following (these are all DNS-caching related):
Dump your browser's cache.
Empty your 'history' folder.
Shut down your browser and restart it.
If that still doesn't work, try rebooting your computer. Some browsers
cache DNS's.
Best of luck,
The GenConnect Team
Mike,
I went back to reread your letter, as I was one who commented on
the list, but didn't remember your mailing. I believe that it was not
your letter that started the hub bub, but the one that followed yours.
Once I reread your letter I remembered it and thought it was a bit of
"fun". The tone of the one that followed yours, I believe, set off the
series of mailings, not yours. It was the one that left the negative
impression with me, anyway. You are always free to come and go
as a CC, but I would hate to see you base your decision on a
misunderstanding. Your letter was definitely not what caused my
response in the first place. Rita - Oconto County
Hi everybody,
First of all, I have created an email address, that I will use for the
WIGenWeb Project
WIGenWebProject(a)aol.com. I am subscribed to this list with that address, and
you all may use that address on your pages. I apologize if some of you have
already updated your pages to include me with another address. The addresses
are still functional, but I wanted one that was for the WIGenWeb Project.
Feel free to update at your leisure!
Secondly, I have done some work with http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/
I will over the next few days, with lots of wonderful help and support, be
updating the pages that are maintained at state level. It is my hope that
they will reflect well on WIGenWeb Project and Wisconsin.
In this transitional period, Tim and I will share the duties of maintaining
the state pages. He will be maintaining the mailing list and the County
Selection Pages. His email address is tstowell(a)chattanooga.net
Over the next full days, as Tim and I settle into our new roles, we will
update the list with items of interest and business.
Thank you for your patience, and please don't hesitate to contact either Tim
or myself if you have any questions.
Tina
Hi,
I went back into the archives to see what it was you wrote because I didn't
recognize your name as someone who's posted lately. I think your post
started the thread, but I don't think your particular post is what started
the waves. It was the post after yours where someone stated they were
leaving the list because of all the emails they got that day assuming it was
merely idle chit-chat (which it really wasn't) and deleted them without even
reading them. Which lead to people voicing their opinions about whether or
not a CC should be able to unsubscribe just because they feel like it, the
chat list, etc...
I took your post as it was, a joke. You were right with your first
intuition of not taking it personally. If you want to give up your county
because of this, that's your decision, but maybe we can let you know that it
WASN'T'T anything you said.

First, I want to congratulate those elected in the recent elections. I wish them the best.
Next, I want to take this opportunity to tender my resignation as CC of Adams County. Things have gotten weird. I normally just lurk and let
the vocal ones have their say. So, one day I submit a jocular note expressing amazement about the volume of mail coming through the list in
just one day, and I unwittingly unleash a firestorm. There were some harsh and uncharitable things said. I thought, don't take it personally,
but then I realized that it was meant personally. So then I thought, are you going to sit there and take it? And I decided that I had had
enough.
The county pages are pretty much self-maintaining now that I configured them to link up with GenConnect, so there really is not much for me to
do with them any more. I have removed all my non-generic material immediately. The Land Patent files will go to the Archives. Whoever gets
these pages will get the maps, although I put a lot of work into them and would appreciate some credit.
I want to point out that I volunteered for becoming a CC. J. Ben begged me to take this on, and I usually enjoyed it. But I am beginning to
get a glimpse of why so many seem to be bolting the effort lately.
The vast majority of CCs are probably decent people. Then...

Hello Everyone,
First of all I would like to thank the Candidates and the CCs
for participating in the Election. I would also like to thank the
Vote counters that provided me with their assistance to insure a
valid and unmistakeable count of the ballots.
Second of all, I would like to be the first to introduce you to
the New State Coordinator of the WIGenWeb, I believe she will do
a very good job and will make decisions that will be fair to all
involved. Your New State Coordinator is
Tina Vickery
Thirdly, I would like to say that with three Candidates for
Assistant State Coordinator, we had a very good selection to
choose from and the one that we chose, I believe will be able to
assist the SC in helping her to make the WIGenWeb Project grow.
Your New Assistant State Coordinator is
Tim Stowell
Now I would like to show the results of the Four Vote Counters,
so everyone can see the results for themselves.
SC Position
Jan Cortez 11
Tina Vickery 27
ASC Postition
Jan Cortez 7
Kelly Mullins 10
Tim Stowell 21
I for one believe that we had a very good turn out for the
election, with 38 of the possible 51 eligible CCs voting. We have
a total of 52 CCs currently, with one CC being less then a week
old before the Election. It is recommended that a CC be at least
a month or older to participate in an election so therefore our
newest CC, Richard Ross, was ineligible to vote. Richard this is
nothing to do with you personally and I hope you will understand
it and I look forward to hearing from you, as I am sure the other
CCs do also, if there is anything we can be of assistance to you
with.
Also at this time I would like to inform the new SC and ASC of a
slight problem that both Tim Stowell, and myself have had over
the past month. We both have sent numerous e-mails to the e-mail
addresses of the CCs of Crawford or Langlade counties with out
any type of response at all. If anyone knows of why these two CCs
maybe unavaible for such a length of time, they may wish to let
Tina know, as we even sent to their personal emails and not just
on the list.
Thank you for permitting me the opportunity to be your Election
Chair person, as one of the Vote Counters told me, "it has been
fun and different".
Election Chair Person,
JT
Hi everyone!
I very much want to thank all of you for your vote. I will work very hard
with ALL of you, to make the WIGenWeb Project the very best that it can be!
I would also like to congratulate Kelly and Jan. The effort that you have
put into this process, the WIGenWeb Project, and the USGenWeb Project is
awesome! I look forward your continued involvement and support.
A big thank you to JT, and the Election Committee. Your work and diligence
throughout this election is truly appreciated.
Over the next few days, I am sure that there will be some announcements that
Tim and I will make to the list. I invite all of you to participate in the
discussions. I truly want the WIGenWeb Project to be a team effort, as we
move to the future. I am very pleased and excited to be serving as your
State Coordinator.
Sincerely,
Tina
I wish to personally thank JT for the excellent work he has done on the
election.
JT Says and I quote:
"I would
like to say that I have had fun and am glad to have found so many
new friends. I hope that we all will continue to work towards the
goal of "Free Genealogy for All" as a team in the future and I am
extending my offer of helping anyone with anything that I can be
of help with.
Please each of you, take care and stay safe, as tomorrow without
each and everyone of us is a lonely thought for the others."
What a very wonderful thing to say. This is the true spirit of WI and all
its wonderful people. God bless you.

Hello Everyone,
As of the closing of the polls at 12:04 AM Central Time on
Sunday 24 October 1999, we have had ballots cast by 38 of the 51
WI CCs. This is roughly 3/4ths of the total number of CCs voting.
I want to thank all that voted, for their time.
I would also like to say that the Ballot site is closed and the
Winners of the Election will be announced no later then Monday,
25 October 1999. The announcement will be made to WIGEN list and
also will be carbon copied out to the Candidates at their
respectful e-mail addresses.
I would like to take this time to say a few little things,
It has been an honor and a priviledge, not a task, to have
served as the Election Chair Person in this election. I would
like to say that I have had fun and am glad to have found so many
new friends. I hope that we all will continue to work towards the
goal of "Free Genealogy for All" as a team in the future and I am

Hello Everyone,
As of 5:00 PM Central Time on Saturday 23 October 1999, we have
had ballots cast by 38 of the 51 WI CCs. This is roughly 3/4ths
of the total number of CCs voting.
I want to thank all that have voted, for your time.
I would also like to ask those that have not voted yet, to
Please Vote, this is for all of us and your vote is a way to
insure that your opinion on who should be elected is heard.
For those of you that feel there is no need to vote, I say, yes
there is. With 2 candidates for SC and 3 for ASC, there is 5 good
reasons to vote. Come and let hear from you, by casting a ballot.
All ballots are confidiential and any info on them is kept in
the strict confidence. So rest assured your vote and info will
not be looked upon in any manner except to be counted to produce
a winner in the two positions we are voting on.
If you lost the ballot URL, it is at

Thank you again for your participation and for letting me serve
you as the Election Chair Person.

Your being off the list was because of technical difficulties, not because
you just outright refused to be on it. There are people who just don't want
to be on it. As the previous SC stated in her resignation letter, along
with the person we all witnessed the other day who said their small hard
drive couldn't handle the 30 messages they got in one day. (Though that's
not a good excuse because there are yahoo, hotmail and numerous other free
mail services that store everything at thier server)
It's stated in the bylaws (which everyone really should read before signing
on as CC) that you need to be on the list. So a "But I didn't know" excuse
shouldn't fly either.
I think the SC should be working towards making WI the best state it can
be.. not spending all their time forwarding messages to people who refuse to
be on the list.
I was automatically subscribed when I became a CC. It's hard to say what
could or should be done without getting too harsh. Maybe find out specifics
on why people don't want to be on the list. Then they can find out if it
was just a glitch in somebody's server and get them resubscribed. Say
"tough cookies" when they say their excuse is "but I just don't feel like
it". (what would happen if people refused to put the USGenweb logo on their
page?) Point them towards yahoo or something when their excuse is their HD
is too small or this is their work email. I don't know.. It's just really
really really stupid for CC's to be making the SC's job more difficult.
And myself along with other CC's don't want to be made to feel guilty for
posting on-topic messages to this list.

Fellow CC's
I feel that I would be negligent in pointing out something with regard to
mandatory
subscription to this or any list, and special work generated because of some
people
who "refuse" to subscribe.
I am one CC who has NOT been on this list for the past three months. As a
result, I
was not aware of the resignations, and the voting until contacted by Tim to
verify
my email address.
My deletion from this list was not of my own doing. Twice in the past 18
months
my mail server has crashed, and many list computers will automatically
unsubscribe
you because of excessive email bouncing, without any human getting involved.
This
has happened to me twice.
The first time this happened, I was alerted to this by a notice from the list
owner,
telling me that I was being dropped because of excessive email bounces, and so I
took action to find the cause.
I contacted my local service provider, and they discovered that they had
entered
something wrong into their system, and every second email that I was supposed
to
receive was instead being returned to the sender! I wonder how many messages I
had
lost that year!
What a nightmare.
The second crash lasted on and off for a week, and that time I received no
notices.
I subscribe to so many lists, to keep current on not only GenWeb, but on my own
surnames, that I did not notice that I was no longer receiving mail from this
list. I was still getting my subscription to the GenWisconsin list, and most
of my
other surname lists, so I did not even miss the one or two that disappeared..
I did not receive any special mailings, because I do not think anyone was aware
that
I was off the list, but my point is to remind everyone to not condemn people
out-of-hand, without getting the facts first. To make a blanket statement that
those who are not on the list refuse to subscribe, means you don't have all the
facts. Don't judge so harshly. Keep an open mind.
p.s. seems to me that we need a genealogy refresher course
Where's the documentation?
Who has refused to subscribe?
Where is that refusal? and when?
When were they reminded that subscription was mandatory? and given a notice to
comply.
And what did the state co-ordinator do about this problem? (Documentation
required here, if notifying someone that they must subscribe or be removed).
If the SC caused more problems for him/herself by bending the rules, then who's
fault is that but the SC.
Sounds like a documentation problem to me, and again, we all clog up the list
because we feel that we have to voice our opinion. No wonder many lists
degenerate. We need strong leadership, with a vision, and a reminder of our
focus......MORE GENEALOGY AVAILABILITY FOR ALL
