Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Shows what I know about how the archives work ;) This being the case, then
you are right, let the counties each take them if they so desire. I
personally don't have the time to take on anymore right now, so if anyone
wants Green, Sawyer and Barron, feel free :)

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Sorry to keep being a bother but I thought all of you would like a copy of the
e-mail from Linda Lewis. She maintains the complete USGenWeb Archives. You
will find that the archives is not a tremendous amount of work. The most work
comes from e-mails that are received with questions as to where do I find this
record, here is my family tree, etc. By the way, GEDCOM's and FTM files are
not archived at this time. Brian has requested that they not be uploaded. He
is hoping to be able to allow them some time this year.
If anyone has any questions, please let me know. I would be happy to help as
much as I can.
Thanks,
Sandi
What we really need is *1* person to maintain the WIGenWeb archives.
Dividing this out is going to cause mass confusion. I should have jumped in
sooner on this, but I've been down with a killer sore throat.
So, who is going to be the lucky volunteer to do this?

Robin,
The Archives was originally configured to be done by the county coordinators;
that is why they have access to the archives directly from the county level.
There are other states that are done this way also. I feel the county
coordinators would be able to do a better service to the archives. I receive
a tremendous amount of mail that should be addressed to the county
coordinators instead of me. Everyone so far has welcomed the idea. What
concerns do you have, and let's all discuss.
Sandi
Thank you to all who have responded. So far the following counties have been
adopted by the county coordinators:
Chippewa, Clark, Dane, Iowa, Juneau, Kenosha, Portage, Richland, Wood
Please let me know if you will be adopting any others. Only a few
instructions, which isn't much different that what you have been doing
already.
When you ftp into rootsweb, you have been placing your files in ONLY the
public directory. When you upload text files into the archives, you will be
placing them in the archive ftp directory. These are TEXT only files, no
html. All files place here will be searchable. Please do not place any of
your html files in the archives. This will cause problems. These files that
are uploaded in the archives ftp are not searchable immediately; Brian L.
needs to reindex all the sites periodically for all of them to be searchable.
Once you upload the file in the archives, you will want to make a notation of
the new available file on the table of contents. Please download your table
of contents from the archives htm directory and change the mailto from me to
you. Please do NOT change the name of your table of contents file, as it is
linked to the main WI Table of Contents.
Please, if you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them. I really
appreciate you taking on this additional responsibility; I know they are in
excellent hands!
Sandi
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I will be returning to school as well as keeping my full time job at work and
home and am unable to devote the necessary time to keep up the Archives. If
you are willing to take over the archives for your county and/or any other
county in the archives, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Sandi
Hi all,
I know a while back, mail was sent out as to how to move your
webpage from geocities to Rootsweb. I thought I kept it, but I can't find
it. Could someone who did keep it please resend it so I can move the
Sheboygan & Calumet county webpages?
Thanks, Debie
