Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I have recently acquired ( thanks to Robin) the book " Wisconsin's Gold Star
List - Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Nurses from the Badger State Who died
in the Federal Service During the World War" published in 1925. It is by no
means 100% accurate or complete, but it is the best that the compilers could
do.
I have put the lists for Marathon County and Lincoln County on my web pages.

<A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~wilincol/">Lincoln County Wisconsin WiGenWeb

I will be glad to do lookups for other counties by name. Please e-mail me -
but put Wisconsin WW1 lookups in the subject line, please.
I also have a new index to Biographies of Lincoln County - some of the
prominent citizens of Lincoln county WI on that web page.

Here's some URL's I use when searching for cities:
URL: http://www.iamerica.com/wi/wicities.html
Lists a Crescent town in Oneida Co, WI
URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood/WisConsin/wicity-c.htm
Lists all the cities currently in Wisconsin as of 1990 census, and it is not
there either.
I heard of a list with all old cities which may have changed names or were
'lost', but neve have found it. This doesn't help much, sorry. R/S MAK

Robin,
I'm sending this to the list as well as you, just in case others are
interested.
I host the mail list for Lake Co., IL and it takes almost *no* time.
There have been times when a little bit of maintenance is reqired, like
when someone moves their e-mail and their mail starts bouncing. Then
there was the time when a subscriber had problems with the address their
ISP was writing into the "subscribe" command (that gets all technical,
but it has to do with where you subscribe from & how your provider
handles your header info).
But, Rootsweb has this terrific Listowners Utilities page from which you
can do any maintenance you need to do. Other than that, it can take as
much time, or not, as you want!
Some listowners write specialized "Welcome" messages. Others sign up
for the "rotating banners" to be added to each message. I didn't do
either. Some listowners constantly monitor & tweak and 'noodge' their
lists. <shrug> Your choice. I play & post when I've got time. Mostly,
I provide the list, and let the subscribers/researchers set their own
pace.
I'd say Go For It! It really doesn't take much effort, except maybe at
first, when you might want to send out a mass mailing to everyone who
has ever posted a query/surname to announce the list, as well as
announcements to any WI-ROOTS-L (is there one?) or other general list
for WI, and add a blurb to your pages. Then you sit back & watch it
develop!
Happy Hunting!

What does it take to host a mail list? I would like to host one for my
county, but I don't want to commit a big chunk of maintenance time, which I
don't have.
