Kathie,
I have a GIRTON ancestor. Caroline GIRTON, dau. Elijah GIRTON and Phoebe b.
ABT 1848 in Wayne Co., m(1). 2 NOV 1865 to William DALE., d. 19 NOV 1914.
The 1850 Census index for Wayne Co. lists Anthony, Levi, Sylvester, and
Felix A. GIRTON in Wayne Co.
In the 1820 census there was a single listing for a Jeremiah GIRTING in
Wayne Co.
Also, I have:
1. From _Tombstone Inscriptions of Wayne Co., Indiana_ compiled by Beverly
Yount:
p. 17 Boston Cemetery

Juliann wife of Sylvester d. 26 JUN 1857 (NOTE: she appears on the 1860
census, so dau. of James and Mary Bowles (this is probably a
transcription error)

3. Indiana 1850 Census Mortality Schedule (covers June 1, 1849 to May 31,
1850)
index by Lowell M. Volkel
Wayne Co., Boston Township p. 331
Name Aged Sex Civil Status POB M. of Death Occup. Illness Duration
Elijah GIRTON 36 M married IN JUL shoemaker Cholera 2d
Mary GIRTON 4 F IN JUL Cholera 1d
Robert F. GIRTON 1 M IN JUL Cholera 1d
My Caroline m. William DALE who died BEF 1878 then she married William J.
Wynn, who died on 11 FEB 1889. She then m. William Kirman 7 APR 1898. He
died 4 FEB 1905 and she died 19 NOV 1914.
Caroline GIRTON shows up in the household of John and Phebe TEMPLETON, and
Phebe GIRTON m. John in 1851, about 2 years after Elijah died. The evidence
(see above) of Mary GIRTON d. at age 3 or 4, both in the 1850 mortality
sched. and as listed in the cemetery notes above, shows that Elijah and
Phoebe were married, so I believe Caroline was also Elijah's dau.
I suspect the Elijah was the son of Jeremiah, but I haven't any proof yet.
Any info you have would be appreciated.

BTW there're still plenty of Nolte's, Peterson's, Girton's etc. around in
Wayne Co., (I grew up there, in Richmond), so hopefully someone out there
will have more info.
BTW(2) From the evidence, there must have been a cholera outbreak in the
summer of 1849, anybody know more about it? Any articles in the Palladium or
the Item? [Can't recall when the newspapers were started or when they
merged]
