Linda & All,
I wrote a paper (my senior thesis) on my ancestors move prior to the
Revolution from Nantucket to Guilford County, NC and began another on
their 1805-1810 migration from North Carolina to Wayne County, Indiana.
I have collected a number of sources! I bet we are related <smile>
Surnames include STARBUCK, MACY, LAMB, WORTH, MENDENHALL, PEDRICK,
FISHER, BOND, BUNKER, MILLS, and COFFIN (I probably left out a few!). I
have some letters and "poems" of BUNKER family members about their
migration (and fears) handed down to me by my grandmother whose mother
was born in Richmond, Indiana.
Quite frankly, I have not seen any evidence that they really did not
like slavery...it was more a matter of pure economics. They migrated to
North Carolina prior to the Revolution because there were less taxes,
whale oiling was on the decline, and the island was getting crowded.
They migrated north prior to the Civil War because they felt they were
running out of room (and they could not compete with slavery) -- if you
look at the land maps of the time you can see how divided these lands
had become and everyone had 8-12 sons in which to divide up the
land....Indiana territories were opening up so they migrated....whole
Meetings for Worship picked up and moved setting in the Wayne County,
Indiana area. I will search through past articles by the Indiana
Historical Society on this subject and see what I come up with and get
back to you! Also, this weekend I will work on putting a bibliography
of migration sources on my web site.

all the
Quakers that made this move from NC to Wayne Co. IN. There would
probably
be lots of inter-relationships among the families found. Ours, WARREN
and
WILLIAMS seemed to have made a stop in TN before moving on to Wayne
Co.
