GROENENDYKE by either of his two wives, Joannah Antonidas or Barbara Buck.
He came from New Jersey to Fayette Co., IN, but his children migrated to

Eli Wright filed a report as the guardian of Jacob, Reed, Abel, Abram,
William, Thomas, Jane and Nancy Wilson (the youngest c. 6) minor heirs of
Jacob Wilson deceased. The entry states that Jacob left a son Isaac who is
21. Eli petitioned the court to sell Jacob's real esate and James
Groenendike, Samuel Moffitt and Jacob Troxell were appointed appraisers of
the real estate, which was purchased by Robert Beatty. At the time of the
sale Nancy one of the wards had reached 21 and had disposed of her interest
in this real estate. The guardian also states that he has learned that
Thomas was a post humous child of Jacob and not mentioned in his will. The
ward Jane was later listed as the wife of Nathan Macy. The court asked Eli
to invest the money of five of his wards in 80 acres each of Congress Land
and he reported that he bought land for them in sections 19 and 20,
township 20, range 8, at $100. for each 80 acres. May 1835

In a chancery suit was entered the will of Jacob Wilson who died August
12, 1823. The will was dated August 9, 1823 and witnessed by James
Groenendyke & William Wilson.

Benjamin Beeson was appointed administrator September 8, 1836 of the
estate of James Groenendyke deceases with Nimrod Ferguson and John
Groenendyke as his securities. Barbara relinquished her right to act as
administrix. Nimrod F. and Jeremiah A. Wilson appraised the personal
property which included a fair amount of farm and household items,
including a windmill and washing machine. The heirs were; the widow
Barbara and 15 children: Catherine Montgomery, Thomas, James Jr., and
Michael Groenendyke all adults and Elias, Johanna F., Montgomery, Monroe,
Susannah, Oliver, David and Elizabeth all minors with John Groenendyke as
their guardian. Final settlement made May 10, 1839.

Groenendyke dec. and stated that the widow had received one third of the
residue of the estate and that the adult heirs Nicholas, Peter, Catherine,

The widow and heirs of James Groenendyke dec. petitioned the court to set
off the widow's dower and partition the balance of James' real estate into
two parts of 7/15 for the adult heirs and Elias a minor and 8/15 as the
share of the other minor heirs. A commission of William W. Thomas,
Nathaniel McClure and Ebeneezer Heaton was appointed to make this
partition. This was done and when presented was accepted by the court.

John Groenendyke was appointed the guardian November 14, 1836 of Elias H.,
Johanna, Montgomery, Monroe, Susannah, Oliver and David Groenendyke
children of James Groenendyke deceased. He was also appointed guardian of
James, Catherine, Mary Jane, Enoch and Amos Groenendyke grandchildren of
James and children of Nicholas Groenendyke deceased a son of James. The
guardian petitioned the court to sell his ward's eight fourteenth interest
in James' real estate. Their interest was appraised by Jeremiah A. Wilson,
Benjamin Beeson and A.B. Conwell. Elizabeth was mentioned as a posthumous
child of James and John was also appointed her guardian. The guardian
John, and Michael and Thomas Groenendyke were listed as the adult heirs and
Barbara as his widow. Before the real estate was put up for sale it was
partitioned into three parts one for the widow, one for the adult heirs and
one for the minor heirs. Elias then twenty one received his share of the
guardian's funds February 1840. Apparently the real estate of the minors
was not sold and the guardian having accumulated some money of theirs
petittioned the court to buy some new land for them in the counties to the
north. He later reported that he looked in Delaware and Madison counties
for land and found none suitable, but was willing to transfer two hundred
acres he owned in Blackford Co. to his wards for six hundred dollars. The
guardian settled with James and Catherine February 1845 as they then were
twenty one, with Mary Jane July 1846 and with Johanna February 22, 1848 who
was then married to Isaac Ware and nearly of full age. This guardianship
was continued.

James Groenendyke was a native of New Jersey, born in 1770, and died in
Fayette County, Ind., in 1836. He married Johannah Hagerman, also of New
Jersey, born in 1780, died in 1825. They had a family of eight children;
three are living---John, Michael and Elias. The deceased are---Nicholas,
Peter, Thomas, James and Catherine. In 1819 they settled in Fayette
County, Ind. They are members of the Presbyterian church. Michael, their
sixth child, was born in Dearborn County, Ind., March 25, 1815, and was
reared and educated in Fayette County. In 1843 he came to Henry County,
and located in Jefferson Township, where he has since resided. He bought
160 acres which was literally in the woods and has made of it one of the
finest homes in the country. He was married in 1837 to Anna Hankins, a
native of Pennsylvania, born December 16, 1815, a daughter of Isaac and
Elizabeth Hankins. They are the parents of three children---James, Amos
and Josephine. Amos enlisted in 1864 as First Lieutenant of Company F, One
Hundred and Twenty-Fourth Indiana Infantry. He was wounded at Franklin and
died at Nashville, December 27, 1864. He was brave, modest and vigilant in
the performance of every duty. Mr. and Mrs. Groenendyke are members of the
United Brethren church.

William Roysdon were appraisers of the personal property which was the

Dickerson Hurst as guardian of Joseph Hankins, deceased, George Hankins,
Elizabeth Ronk, Michael Groenendyke and Isaac Hankins. In final entry
Elizabeth Ronk was listed as Elizabeth Jones. November 9, 1840.
