In reply to LeeAnderson's email about Charlotte Bowman:
I also have connection to WayneCounty involving a Bowman:
Joseph Holmes BRIDGES, b. Nov. 15, 1825 or 1828 in Wayne County, IN (his son
William Albert’s death certificate, completed by grandson E. O. Bridges, says
his name was Joseph William Bridges, born in Ohio). d. Feb. 21, 1899,
Otterville, MO., in Cooper County, east of Sedalia. Buried at IOOF Cemetery,
Otterville.
(From p. 1031 of the History of Howard and Cooper Counties, dated 1883) He
was 7th child. (??) in a family of ten. Six children survived by 1883. He
remained with his father until age 30. History of Cooper County book had his
birthday as Nov. 15, 1828.
Married on Jan. 3, 1855 (or 1/1/1854) in Jefferson Co., IN, to Sarah Ann
BOWMAN, b. Feb. 22, 1832 in Madison, Indiana (also verified on son William
Albert’s death certificate), d. May 23, 1918 in Otterville, MO. Eldest dau.
of Jacob BOWMAN (b. 7/22/1806-7 OH) and Mary GUDGELL (b. 1/20/1809-10 PA.)
Bowman and Gudgell married 5/26/1831 in Jefferson Co., IN. Also spelled
Gudgel or Gudgall. In the fall of 1858 Joseph and Sarah left Indiana and
located in Bureau County, IL, with their family, where they lived for (about)
17 years. Sarah's relatives also settled in Milo Township in Bureau County.
Back in Indiana, there are many records of Jacob Bowman(s) buying land. I
also find two instances where Stephen Gudgel, Sarah's grandfather, and Jacob
Bowman, her father, jointly owned two 160-acre plots in Jefferson Co., IN.
One was the NW part of Section 19, township 2-N, range 10-E from the 2nd PM,
and the other was the SE part of Section 23, township 2-N, range 9-E, from
the 2nd PM. The issue dates were Dec. 5, 1831—the same year Jacob married
Mary Gudgell. Stephen Gudgell had purchased 80 acres on Jan. 14, 1823, in
Bartholomew Co., IN ( W1/2SW of Section 26, 8-N township, range 6-E of 2nd PM.
Jacob Bowman, who was a Milo township (Bureau Co., IL) trustee and assessor
(elected in 1874), died the Friday before April 4, 1878, at Henry, Marshall
Co., IL, after a lingering illness of several months. He was injured some
months before by being thrown by a calf "he was leading in his years??" which
led to paralysis and death. He left a wife, two sons and six daughters, all
married. He owned a quarter section of land in Milo township, a beautiful
farm, which he lived on until two or years before his death, when he leased
it and bought a residence in Henry on North Edwards street, where he and his
wife, a widowed daughter, and two nieces lived. Rev. H. W. Sparling of St.
John's Episcopal church officiated at the funeral held in the Bowman home,
from whence the remains were taken to the train to be delivered to Tiskilwa
and the family burying ground. He was an early settler of the region, it was
reported by the Henry Republican of Henry, IL, coming here 25 years
previously. He was reported to be born in Ohio, but lived many years in
Indiana before coming to Illinois. He is buried in Sec. 1, Lot 25 of Mount
Bloom Cemetery, Milo township, Bureau County, IL. Interment No. 350.. A Louis
BOWMAN, Interment No. 2517 is in Section 1, Lot 15. There are two Mary
BOWMANS, one is in Sect. 3, Lot #65, interment No. 915, and the other is in
Section 1, Lot #25, interment No. 1159. I need to get the actual stone
readings to learn the dates.
Does anyone recognize this family? Was George Bowman a brother of Jacob
Bowman? Would like to discover his (their) parents.
