This phenomenon is known as Chimerism. It is very rare: only 30
humans have been found to have this condition, but it is thought that
in-vitro fertilization may increase the incidence of chimerism. One
example is the recently named "vanishing twin syndrome". Here is an
article that explains the phenomena:
http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic3411.htm
It is pronounced: Chi - mare -ism with the accent on the middle
syllable, and "chi" is pronounced like the drink "Chai".

Just adding my two cents worth:
I was watching a research program on TV lately where the mother was
declared
not the mother of her own children, since she had applied for some
welfare,
the cops were accusing her of fraud, and it became a court case,
then her
third child was born, and lo and behold that child also tested as
not hers,
when the court had an investigater witness the birth and every step
of the
DNA test samples that were gathered, so we all may still find
errors in DNA
testing. They did determine that she actually had two different DNA
genes,
and there is a known reason for that, but this means we still have
to be
careful and to not always discredit a connection that DNA says does
not
exist.

Hi Beverlee,
Answering an email is what mailing lists are for. Your welcome and
thank
you for the comments on the DNA listings.
Yes it is hard on us ladies, if we don't have a male of the surname
we want
to test. Even with testing my surname male I have not broken down
my wall...
I do know who he is related to, and that we share a common
ancestor, just
not how we are related.
DNA is not the end all, you have to have good paperwork too. What
Ydna will
do for you is confirm a relationship or let you know if your
barking up the
wrong tree. For my genealogy search this was important. I thought
my line of
Gilpins was from England, I found out we connect to a line of
Gilpins that
have been in Ireland for a few hundred years. So now I can center my
personal research in the Irish Gilpins, and immigration to Canada
and the
United States.
I know the one guy thought I was pushing YDNA tests and in a way I
do. Its
just that every genetic company I know of offer discounts during the
holidays and if a person wanted to test, now is the time to do it.
And if
you didn't know the discounts were being offered then you could
miss out....
But a person must know what they expect from a test and be
realistic, that's
why I created my webpage. So you could read and understand the
different
tests.
