Eunice Bartlemay was born in either Miamisburg, Ohio, or Pennsylvania in 1824. She moved
to Wayne County, Indiana with her family (I think) and married Henry Brown. Henry died in
1849 from a Cholera epidemic. They lived in Boston, Wayne County, Indiana at this time.
Eunice and Henry had at least one daughter that I know of, Matilda Ann Brown. I can't
find any Bartlemays on the 1850 census in either Indiana or Ohio.(but I know they were
there). I know that Eunice had a sister, Susan, born in Pa. She married Robert Russel in
1835, Wayne County. Susan later married Joel Sharrits in Miamisburg, Ohio and they are on
the 1850 census with a daughter, Mahala. Eunice came back to Ohio, because in 1851 she
married William Ryan, and Joel Sharrits gave permission for this marriage. Matilda Brown
later married William East. Both Eunice and Matilda can't be found on any 1850 census
that I have looked at. I think that Eunice and Susan also had a brother named Joseph. He
married
Caroline Goldman in Indiana, same day and year as Eunice Bartlemay married Henry Brown,
March 5, 1843. I did find Joseph on the 1850 census, Miamisburg, Ohio living with
Caroline and their son, Joseph, he was a hotel keeper. I found that going through every
page of Miami Twp. on
ancestry.com, so I wonder if they missed Eunice and Matilda
somewhere, too, or if the name was misspelled (I have seen it Bartelmay, Bartelmy,
Bartlmy, and many other ways.) If anyone else is researching these families, I'd love
to hear from you. William Ryan, Eunice's 2nd husband, served in the Civil War and I
have his pension records which gave me most information here. From Eunice's death
cert, I learned that her mother's maiden name was Mary Hillard, and she was born in
PA. The father's name and birthplace was unlisted, but it may have been Lewis. The
informant on the death cert was Lewis Ryan of Dayton, Eunice and William's son. There
is also a Bowman connection, as well, as a daughter !
of Eunice
and William married Abraham Bowman. Thanks for bearing with me in this long query!
Lisa
