Dear Wayne Co. IN list:
I still don't know where my Quaker/Methodist ggggrandparents, Jereter
(Vickory) and Wiley WALLS were listed in the 1870 Census. Is it possible
I have overlooked someone in Wayne County, IN?
Jereter was born on or about August 31, 1802 in Randolph County, North
Carolina and died on February 25, 1876 in or near Henry County, Indiana.
She is buried in Brookshire Methodist Cemetery in Henry County, IN. I
believe she was a daughter of Absalom and Kessandria/Cassandra Vickery
who were first cousins who married in 1800 in Randolph County, NC. I
have her photograph, which is a small and very dark tintype. It did not
help that she wore a very very black dress and a black headcovering. Her
hair was white and she had very fair looking features, quite a beautiful
woman in her early 70's.
Wiley WALL/WALLS was a son of Samuel Wall and Mary ?Brittain?. He was
born late 1799 and his sister Nancy WALL married John LOVE III who then
moved to Wayne County, IN along with his brother Brittain or Britten
WALL's family. Britten's family were Quakers who subsequently relocated
to Grant County, IN. I believe that Wiley WALL died in Indiana because
the obituary of his grandson indicates a death date of about 1871 and
his daughter, Hannah, had died in April of 1870 in Randolph Co., NC and
was buried there in a Quaker cemetery on April 27, 1870. It stands to
reason that Wiley and Jereter took their grandson, William Franklin
Walls, born March 27, 1862, to Indiana after his daughter died, and
this is supported by events described in the obituary. I also have Wiley
WALL/Walls' picture, also a tintype, but of different quality from
Jereter's picture.. He is wearing worn out clothing, which is a suit
jacket and has a bushy beard on his chin. His hair is all white and he
is balding but still has his hair brushed back somewhat behind his ears.
His eyes appear to be light colored.
Wiley's youngest son Brazilla WALL is listed as Brazilla WALLACE in
Henry County, IN for 1870. His grandson, William Franklin Walls was
listed in the 1880 Census in Henry Co. IN within the household of Clark
HOSIER. But I have never been able to find Wiley WALLS or his wife
Jereter in any 1870 Census sheet. I have lots of information, which I am
indeed blessed to have, but this piece of information is pretty tough to
find! Would someone have any ideas on this? (Wiley's sister Nancy WALL
Love died in 1850, leaving her husband John Love III and various LOVE
descendants. Nancy is buried on Swaim's Hill cemetery).
Regards,
Tim Walls
