The Reuben & Harrison Allen listed in Van Buren TWP were brothers, sons of
the Richard Allen you found, they came from Surry Co, NC, Richard was son of
Thomas (NJ), who was son of John (CT), who was son of David from Ipswich,
Essex, Massachusetts. I did extensive research on them, presently I cannot
connect them to Reuben Allen of Wayne Co or my RW (Reuben)Allen in Madison
County, IN. RW Allen & William H Allen lived in Fall Creek Twp, Madison Co,
IN - South & West of Anderson, just east of Pendleton. I believe RW farmed
property originally owned by Hiram Denney, his father in law. I think
Reuben in Wayne Co is the 12th or 13th Reuben Allen I have researched. I
have started to think it is the 2nd most common name to John Smith, what are
the chances there were 2 Reuben Allens in Madison Co at the same time.
Wayne Co Reuben Allen is the most promising as RW's ancestor I have found so
far.
Thanks for the 2 tips

Bill,
The reason I looked at you query closely was the surname Allen. It's my
husband's middle name. His mother was an Osborn/ Farlow/ Erk/ Eggemeyer/
Miller from Wayne County, Indiana. My in-laws would never tell us why they
chose the name so I've been looking at other Wayne County families.
Look for help in North Carolina Quaker records at Guilford College. Bob
Carter, a NC Quaker and researcher, is very active doing cemetery
documentation in several NC counties of that area. The following is a link
to a Surry genealogy web site he and another researcher have created that
may be of help to you.

Though your ancestor was disowned do not be surprised to find him back in
the fold in a different meeting.
The 1850 Census , Van Buren Twp., Madison Co., Indiana lists Reuben ,
Richard and Harrison Allen, all from North Carolina, on the same page. Have
you searched the land records for these men ? Possibly the deeds would give
some more information as it may have been one or two large tracts that
were divided over the years and more personal information may be included.

R W Allen (Probably Reuben's son) was my Gr Gr Grandfather. He has been a
brick wall for years, his neighbor in Madison Co, IN was William H Allen,
I've always thought they were brothers but could not prove it. I recently
found documentation that William H Allen was the son of Reuben Allen from
Wayne County, that is the first clue I have found to his ancestry. It fits
that R W Allen could be the son of Reuben (the name Reuben was already taken
at the supper table so the son Reuben answered to R W). As further evidence
R W & William H Allen were brothers, RW named his 2nd son William Henry
Allen and called him Henry. 1820 census indicates Reuben had a child the
correct age to be R W. I'm trying to find additional facts to support or
dispute my strong suspicion that Reuben is R W's father and hoping to locate
other siblings to broaden my search options on the family.
I have no evidence or oral tradition that they were or were not Quakers.
Nothing from R W Allen forward indicates he was a Quaker, but that doesn't
mean he didn't come from a Quaker background. Some of his actions have made
me think he was strongly anti slavery, certainly a Quaker trait. I did some
searching in Madison Co in Quaker records but didn't find any mention of
either RW or William H Allen in any of the records.
I believe Reuben came from Rowan Co or Montgomery Co, NC. 1810 Census
places a Reuben in both counties. In Rowan Co in 1810 there was also a Hugh
Allen, Jonathan Allen, and William Allen, same names appear in the 1820
Wayne Co census making me think they are all related and migrated together.
In 1810 Montgomery Co had a Reuben & William and it is also possible that
Wayne Co Reuben was from there. At this point in my research I feel like
Rowan Co is the more likely of the 2. If this Reuben is in fact the one
married to Elizabeth Hendricks, that marriage took place in Surry Co.
Thanks for the reference to Earlham College, I did a quick search and it
looks like a good place to start.
Bill

Bill,
Was Ruben Allen Quaker? If so, try searching through records at Earlham
College, Richmond, Indiana. Where was he living in North Carolina? Marie

I am searching for information on Reuben Allen, living in Wayne Co in 1820(
per 1820 census), he migrated from North Carolina, (possibly from Rowan
County) in 1819 or 1820. His oldest son was William H Allen. His youngest
son may have been R W Allen (also Reuben, but used his initials rather than
Reuben as an adult).
The elder Reuben may have migrated to Wayne Co with other Allen families,
perhaps his brothers and their families. (There were 6 other Allen families
listed in the 1820 Wayne Co census: Adam, age 26-44; Hugh, age 26-44;
Jeremiah, age 45+; John, age 16-25; Jonathan, age 45+; William, age 26-44)
The 1820 census shows the following members of the Reuben Allen household:
4 males under 10
1. Is the youngest son R W Allen, born 3 Oct 1818 - later
migrated to Madison Co, IN
2.
3.
4.
1 male 16 to 25
William H Allen, born 07 Sep, 1798, married Sarah Prather in 19
Oct 1826 in Wayne Co - later migrated to Madison Co, IN
1 male 45 & Over
1. Reuben Allen, born 1775 or prior
1 female under 10
1.
4 females 10 to 15
1.
2.
3.
4.
1 female 26 to 44
1. Was his wife Elizabeth Hendricks born 1776?
Does anyone have any information about the Reuben Allen family or any of the
other Allens who may be his siblings or otherwise related.
