Folks;
Many thanks to Cindy, Theresa, and Dave for the warm welcome.
Ironically enough, my direct paternal line is one of the branches of my family history I
know the least about. And I've been working on genealogy for some 30 years.
Here's what little I know;
My ggGrandparents, James Wilson (1795 NC - abt 1875 MO) and Margaret (last name unknown,
possibly Mosier, Messer, something along those lines, according to family lore) (1804
NC-abt 1865 MO) lived in Monroe Co, TN and Bradley Co, TN off and on from at least 1827 to
1845, when they moved to Dade Co, MO, my family's home county since then. On census
records, their birth state has been put down as North Carolina. Thanks to court house
fires in Dade County in 1863 and 1883, this is about all the concrete evidence I have.
Everything else I believe about my ggGrandparents, is based on family lore, evidence based
on other connected families, and conjecture. I do know that one ggUncle, William B.
Wilson, was known/believed to be born in Wayne Co, IN, 27 Jan 1838. Based on this, I
believe that James and Margaret were born in NC, moved to Wayne Co, IN abt 1805-1810,
lived there until marriage, then James got land from the Cherokee Secession of the
1820's in Monroe County, where their first child, Francis Marion, was born in 1827.
They are on the 1830 Monroe Co, Census. I think James must have borrowed money against
the place, and lost the place in the panic of 1837, then they packed up and moved back to
Wayne Co, where William was born in 1838, and they got back on their feet, and got another
place from the last Cherokee Secession before the Trail of Tears, which was in Brtadley
Co, TN, where they were on the 1840 census, then they sold out and moved to Dade Co, MO in
1845 or '46, where daughter Selina was born in 1847, and where they lived out their
lives.
James and Margaret's family is as follows; Francis Marion (1827-1891), James Calvin
(1832-1911), Elizabeth (1835-1892), William B. (1838-1909), John Newton (my gGrandpa)
(1840-1886), Margaret A. (1845-1910), Selina (1847-1870/71), and Benjamin (1850-bef 1860).
For what it's worth, Francis Marion, William, and John Newton all served in L Co, 6th
MO Cav (Union) 1862-65.
James' parents may have been John Wilson (1766-1838) and Hannah Baird (1770-1837).
But I'm trying to track down any evidence that that determines whether they were in
Wayne Co, IN in the time period 1805-1830, after which they moved to Washington
Courthouse, Fayette Co, OH. This possibility has been put forward by a cousin, but I have
no proof of who James' parents really were.
That's what I've got.
I'll check out the resourses that have been shared as I can, but if anybody comes up
with anything else, it would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Bob
