Of course many Welsh newspapers online are FREE at the Welsh Newspapers Online site

There is an index to items appearing in the Swansea local newspaper, the
'Cambrian' at

In most parts of Wales the patronymic naming system had finjshed by about 1800, though
some families were reported with variants of the same surname in successive censuses,
particularly 1841 to 1861. DAVID/DAVIES; MORGAN/MORGANS; JENKIN/JENKINS
The place of birth is only shown in censuses from 1851 onwards. In 1841 it only shows
whether the person had been born in the county they were then living in, or not. Also note
that 1841 census normally shows the ages of adults rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so
someone shown as age 40 might be up to 44.

Subject: [WALES-GEN] tips for tracing family in Wales
Hello all
Here's something from Find My Past:
Top tips for tracing family in Wales
1. Welsh naming patterns traditionally followed patronymic rules. Jones, Evans, Davies
and Williams are all patronyms, meaning son of John, Evan, David and William
respectively.
2. Finding your Welsh ancestor’s birthplace is essential when it comes to confirming you
have traced the right person. Start your search with UK censuses 1841-1911, which recorded
place of birth.
3. Our British Newspaper Collection includes over 40 Welsh titles. Use these amazing
resources to uncover a wealth of information about your ancestors’ lives.
My own top tip: Start with GENUKI at

What's your best tip?
