I have traced my g-g-grandfather's birthplace to Llangystennin. Does anyone know where
that is? In the ecclesiastical parishes of Caernarfonshire it looks like the parish is
south of Llandudno, but when I went to the multimap site they could not locate it. Does
anyone have any information on this parish? Thank you, Robin
My grandfather was born in Penrhyn. I'm having a bit of trouble with the
name though. I find it listed as Penrhyn, Port Penrhyn, and
Penrhyndeudraeth. Are these all the same? If they are the same place, why
the different names?
Jeff Williams
Penrhyn is the Welsh word for a peninsular, and is a fairly common element
in Welsh place names.
Penrhyndeudraeth is a small town in northern Merioneth.
Penrhyn Gwyr is the Gower near Swansea.
Castell Penrhyn and Port Penrhyn are the castle and port owned by the
Douglas-Pennant family of Llandegai near Bangor.
If you can give some details about your grandfather, name, approximate year
of birth etc I'm sure that it will be possible to work out which of the many
Penrhyn's he hailed from.
All the best

Llangystennin is a very small parish that doesn't have a town or village of
any size within its boundaries. It's in between the parishes of Llanrhos and
Llansanffraid Glan Conwy and, as you have worked out, just south of
Llandudno. To have a rough idea of where it is on Multimap use "Mochdre" as
a reference point. (Parts of the village of Mochdre are in Llangystennin
parish).
All the best
