"Mrs. Mary, wife of John Evans, one of the best known women in Wilkes-Barre died
yesterday morning at 9:30 at her home on Northampton street after a serious illness of ten
days. Mrs. Evans's husband is a member of the furniture firm of Evans & Hughes,
East Market street.
"Deceased was born in Goginarr, near Aberystevith, Wales, fifty-eight years ago and
came to this country with her husband in 1869. For twenty-one years Mrs. Evans made her
home in Warrior Run, where Mr. Evans was a leading merchant. During her residence there
she was a member of the Welsh Presbyterian Church and always took an active part in the
work. When she came to this city she joined the church on Meade street. She leaves her
husband and eight children - Mrs. John R. Jones of this city, Mrs. William S. Williams of
Warrior Run; David C. Evans, merchant of Warrior Run; William J. Evans of Plains; and
Margaretta, Elizabeth, Richard and Lydia who live at home. The deceased is also survived
by her mother Mrs. John Sylvanus Williams; a sister, Mrs. William Thomas, and two
brothers, David S. and Richard S. Williams of the firm of Williams Bros. of this city.
Mrs. Evans was a woman of fine character and many friends will sincerely mourn her death.
"The funeral of Mrs. John Evans will take place on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock,
the services to be at the house, 274 Northampton street."
