"John Dukes, one of the best known residents of the Heights, died yesterday after a
short illness of bronchitis, aged 51 years. He was highly respected by a large circle of
friends and during his residence of over thirty years in this city brought up a large and
worthy family. He was by occupation a miner and for the greater part of his time was
employed by the Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Co. and the Red Ash Coal Co., but for the
past year had been employed as a watchman on West River street. He was a native of
Aberdare, Wales, and thirty years ago was one of the first members of a Welsh band under
the leadership of the late Gwilym Gwent. Deceased is survived by the following children:
Mrs. Robert Miles, Mrs. William Richard, Mrs. Herbert Hayden, Evan Dukes of Georgetown and
John, at home. He was a member of Maneto Tribe of Red Men and an attendant of the Puritan
Church. The funeral will be held on Thursday at 2 o'clock p.m. Rev. E.J. Morris will
officiate and interment will be in Hollenback Cemetery."
