"At 6:45 on Wednesday evening occurred the death of a venerable old lady, Mrs. Mary
David, at the home of Rees L. David, 54 Custer Street, of general debility, aged 86 years.
Mrs. Mary David was born in Baglan, Glamorganshire, South Wales, Sept. 12, 1816.
Deceased's maiden name was Miss Mary Thomas and she was married to Evan J. David in
Aberavon in 1837. From this marriage seven children were born, two of whom are now
living. In 1849 Mrs. David buried her husband. In 1880 she came to this country with her
two daughters, Ann and Jane, and settled in this city. Since then she resided with her
daughter, Jane David, wife of Rees L. David of the Heights. Since the death of her
daughter in 1893, she has been a mother to her deceased daughter's children with whom
she lived until her death yesterday.
"Mrs. David was a devoted member of the First Welsh Congregational Church of the
Heights ever since her arrival in this city. She was also a member of the Daughters of
Pocahontas. By her benevolent and amiable disposition and her integrity of character she
won a host of friends and admirers. She died peacefully, surrounded by her children and
grandchildren.
"Deceased is survived by one brother, Richard Thomas of Briton Ferry, and one son
John of Aberavon, both of South Wales; also one daughter, Ann, wife of Lewis Lewis of this
city, and one grandson, Evan J. Thomas, besides the following grandchildren: Miss Mary
H., Miss Sarah A., Evan J., William R. and Arthur, all of this city. The funeral will be
held on Saturday afternoon from the home of Rees L. David, 54 Custer Street."
