(Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday here in the U.S., I'm submitting my second batch of
obituaries on Wednesday instead of Thursday. These will also be my last submittals until
after January due to the holidays and some minor surgery.)
The following article was found in the Wilkes-Barre (PA) Record, 30 Apr 1902, Page 4. If
anyone is interested in receiving a copy of this obituary, please send me your mailing
address.
(Instead of submitting this to any specific Mailing List, I am submitting it to the
General list in the hopes that it will be seen by a more diverse group.)
"Mrs. Ruth Protheroe, widow of John Protheroe of West Side, Scranton, died suddenly
on Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock. She had been ailing since January from an attack
of rheumatism, but for the past month the family thought she was convalescing.
"The family came from Merthyr Tydvil, Wales, in 1868, and settled in Scranton, where
a large family was brought up. She was 70 years of age and was a zealous member and
worker in the Welsh Baptist Church, Scranton. Prior to their emigrating to the United
States they conducted an extensive grocery business in Wales for a long period of years.
"She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Davis, wife of Rev. W. Davis of
Providence, Pa.; R.J., Edwin, Thomas, William, all of Scranton. She was a sister of John
Davis, a merchant at Dowlais, Wales.
"They have scores of friends in Wyoming Valley, who regret the passing away of this
aged lady. Funeral on Wednesday at 2:30."
