Hi,
I had a look on the 1881 Census and this is the only John Prothero I could
find living in Cardiff, there were others in other parts of Glamorganshire.
I know the name doesn't have the "e" on the end but that isn't a
problem.
Sometimes it was due to the fact that the people living in the dwelling were
unable to read and write and the enumerator would have to guess.
The number after the M [Male] F[Female] is the age of the peson in 1881.
[R] is the relationship of the person to the Head of the household.
You might find a clue from this if any of the names were used in the
following generations of the family.
Regards,
Margaret Harvey

Subject: [WALES-GEN] John Prothero(e)
Hi,
I am looking for information on my wife's grandfather, John Prothero.
Born in Wales, possibly Cardiff area, est 1870's, possibly 1860's.
Left home at about 15, to go to sea. Seems to have joined the Merchant
Navy, and served in the Boxer rebellion.
Moved to Australia, by early 1900's. Dropped 'e' from "Protheroe"
name.
Married Eva Mary Jane Myers, in 1902, from Broulee area, south cost of
NSW.
John died @ Merrylands, NSW in 1948
Any information or other avenues of enquiry would be appreciated.
