"Yesterday at noon occurred the death of John Griffiths at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. John Williams, New Empire street. Deceased had reached the ripe age of 80 years.
Three years ago he had a paralytic stroke, from which he never fully recovered, though he
was able to get about a little. Mr. Griffiths was born at Carnarvon, North Wales, and was
always known as John Griffiths "Garn". He emigrated to this country sixteen
years ago, his wife having died the previous year in Wales. He is survived by eight
children, four sons and four daughters. The eldest son lives in Ffestimog [sic], North
Wales. John, Thomas and David live at Pottsville. Three of his daughters reside in this
city - Mrs. Owen Williams of South Meade street, Mrs. John Williams of New Empire street
and Mrs. Henry Cox of Hillside street. His youngest daughter, Mrs. John Jones, lives in
Nanticoke.
"Mr. Griffiths was an active member of the Welsh Presbyterian Church of this city.
Having always lived a consistent Christian life, he was looked upon as one of the
"faithful old fathers in Israel". He was also an ardent Sunday school worker
and, being an intelligent and interesting teacher, his class of men was always large and
one of the most conspicuous in the Sunday school. For some time past he longed to enter
into his long rest and his translations was peaceable and Christianlike.
"The funeral will probably be held on Saturday afternoon."
