If you search
www.freebmd.org.uk for birth of Frederic SMITH in 1882 you
will find a link to how to order the birth certificate online from the GRO.
Nearest I can find on FreeBMD to Anna STONE is Annie STONE born Sep qr 1866
in Hereford district (which included some parishes in Monmouthshire). There
was also a Hannah Maria STONE registered in Sep qr 1861 in Pontypool
district, Monmouthshire. I present evidence below suggesting that she was
actually your 'Anna'
The Anna you are after was in 1881 in Usworth, County Durham, a coal mining
area. That is hundreds of miles from Monmouth, so she is unlikely to have
got there on her own. Also in Usworth there is a Miles HANDY in the coal
mining line with mother-in-law Hannah STONE 49 b Wellington Somerset,
brother in law Thomas STONE 16 b Usworth and sister-in-law Isabella 10 b
Washington, Durham. The wife, Mary A. 27 was born in Ashbrittle, Wellington,
Somerset.
RG11; Piece: 4984; Folio: 101; Page: 2 and page 1, across two pages.
This family were in Garndiffaith, Trevethin, Monmouthshire in 1861, in
Pontypool district, Hannah Stone, married, Head, b Wellington Somerset, son
William 10 b Devonshire and daughter Mary Ann age 7 b Ashbrittle Somerset.
RG9; Piece: 4009; Folio: 21; Page: 17
My guess is that Anna (Hannah) was the next daughter of the family, already
on the way in 1861 census, when her father had already left to look for work
elsewhere.
In 1901 census Hannah STONE was mother-in-law to John R BRACK, a Coal-deputy
overman who had married Isabella, still in Usworth, Durham.
In 1871 I tracked them down as STONES in Usworth,Durham
William 43 miner b Somersetshire
Hannah 39 b Somersetshire
William 19 miner b Devonshire
Anna Maria 9 b Wales Garndiffaith
Thomas 5 b Usworth DUR
Edith Ellen 3 b Usworth DUR
Isabella 11 months b Washington DUR
RG10; Piece: 4994; Folio: 85; Page: 12
is the reference
Usworth was in Chester-le-Street registration district.
The marriage of Mary Ann STONE to Miles has his surname as HAND, and is in
Dec qr 1874. I wonder whether your Anna was married as Anna Maria STONE in
Gateshead district in Dec qr 1883 either to John HODGSON or Benjamin MILLER.
Edith Ellen married in 1889 to Henry EDDY or William SIMPSON, Isabella in
Sep qr 1890 to John Robert BRACK. Thomas married, I suspect in Jun qr 1888
to Dorothy DUKE or Polly BEATY.
It looks as if William STONE died age 55 in Dec qr 1875 in Chester-le-Street
district, though there is an age discrepancy.
I hope someone else can track down your Frederic SMITH.
Jeff
