I hate to confuse matters, but there is another way of spelling the name
which is pronounced as 'Fanshaw' - believe it or not, it is spelled
FEATHERSTONEHAUGH - but pronounced 'Fanshaw' (or 'Fenshaw.') Odd lot,
those
English! (Don't know if there is any special way it is pronounced in the
Welsh accent.)
Best wishes.

Subject: [WALES-GEN] Pronunciation Assistance Please!
Can anyone tell me how the surname FANSHAWE would be
pronounced in the Welsh dialect?
Briefly, this is for a research project on FANSHAWE in the American
Colonies ca.
1643. The progenitor of our family, William FANSHAWE's, name
was sometimes spelled as variations of FANSEY, FANCEY, FANCY, etc. in Long
Island, New York. There is a tradition that he was from Wales. I am
wondering if the Welsh pronunciation of FANSHAWE may be reason for these
variant spellings - or if, like the Yorkshire and Devon dialects, the Welsh
may have used a "shay" spelling (or pronunciation) for "shaw" 300
years ago,
that could have produced a FANSHAY spellings as the basis for the Colonial
FANSEY, FANCY, etc. variants of the FANSHAWE surname.
(In the 3rd generation of this family in Connecticut, the English
pronunciation of
FANSHAWE as FAN-shur produced FANSHER, FANCHER, and other
similar variant spellings.)
Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
