Dear List,
This is my first posting to this list and I am hoping there is somebody who
may be able to help me please.
I have an elusive ancestor by the name of William Smith who was born in
Paulton Somerset in 1848.
He married in 1868 and had a daughter in 1869 and after that I couldn't find
any trace except recently I found
a possible death for wife and child in the Clutton district in 1870 and
71.Then looking for William was a
chore as I have been looking for him with a wife and child until I was
looking through the 1871 census and
stumbled across a William Smith (single) aged 22,born Poulton (incorrect
spelling) living at a Barracks in
Breconshire, sub district of Brecknock in Wales. He was listed as a Private
in the 1/2 3 Regiment.
If this is my Ancestor does anyone think it is feasable that he was claiming
to be single when in fact he
may have been widowed.I suppose in theory he was single.Depending on when
the census was taken he
may have still had a daughter who died in the last quarter of 71.
Also can anybody tell me anything about this regiment and how would I go
about getting records
to determine if it was my ancestor.
Thank you for your time,
Regards,
