"At No. 9 shaft, Pittston, yesterday an accident occurred that resulted in the death
of John Emanuel, a well known resident of that city. The deceased had for many years
lived on the farm close to No. 9 shaft and he decided to make a trip to a near by
blacksmith shop to have come coopering done. With the idea of shortening the trip he
walked along the light track to No. 9, and was run down by some cars. The runner called
to him but Mr. Emanuel became confused and failed to get out of the way. His right leg
below the knee was badly crushed. He became unconscious and sank rapidly.
"Mr. Emanuel was 74 years old, and for fifty years had been a resident of Pittston.
Born in Carmarthenshire, Wales, he had for many years been identified with the interest of
his people. He is survived by an adult family of four children.
"The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home.
The remains will be laid away in the family plot in Pittston Cemetery."
